Default Gas tank clean out question

Hi, I'm a new member and this is my first post. I have a 1990 ZX7 that I purchased new. It's sat in my mom's garage for a lot of years and I want to get it running again. I pulled the tank to flush it and here's my question. Is there some trick to getting everything out of the tank? I drained out the varnish and rinsed with some gas. I could see some rust in the tank so I tried to blast the loose rust with a hose (water) but I can't seem to get every last speck out. To me it looks like the lip on the filler hole keeps everything from flowing out. Do I just need to keep flushing longer? Or maybe flush it while the tank is upside down? The bike only has 7300 miles on it and looks like new, I really want to make it work. Thanks for the help!

Lots of topics on this. Search for "Kreem" or "POR15." While these posts deal mainly with coating your tank, they will contain info on what other members have done to get the tank clean.

i myself just put a bunch of nuts and bolts in there with some fresh gas... shake it around for a while then i went to a car wash stall... dunno how common these are in the rest of the world but they are pretty common in the usa... use the pressure washer there using the "rinse" option and finally rinse it clean with some gas... then replace the fuel filter and check it regularly... bikes been running fine for 2 years after i did this...

From what you described, it doesn't sound like the rust is really bad. You can get a stripper chemical to remove the rust and rinse the whole thing out with water. let it dry and then fill it up.

If you check the POR-15 sites, you'll see that there are a few steps in the process. The first is a cleaner, the second a stripper, and then a sealer. (I think that's the right order). If you don't have rust really bad, you might get away with the first two steps only. If you want piece of mind, do the third as well. Take your time and do it right the first time though. it will take you about a week to do it all correctly.
