For someone starting out there are tons of choices. Sport bike or cruiser? You can get a new Ninja 500 or a Vulcan 500 for about 5K. Used you can get the 650 sportbike or the 900 cruiser both only a couple of years old. Try cycletrader.com or craigslist.com to get an idea of whats out there.

Lots of options provided you do a little research. I second gary's cycletrader.com reference, as well as the two 500s (Vulcan and Ninja) as starter bikes.

5k will buy you alot of bike, probably even too much for a first bike.

a good condition 2003-4 636. ive been riding canyons for 12 yrs and bikes for 26 and my 2003 6rr is still way more bike than i can use, even on the track. starting with a 500ex or similar is still much more than a rookie can use

5k is plenty for a budget to get you a bike that is only a few years old.

I think a 650R or Z1000 is good bet. The Z1000 is WAAAY faster, but forgiving enough to allow a beginner to learn.

i bought my zzr for 3500.. it is my starter bike and has a lot of forgiveness for my moments of stupidity.. but 5k total gives you a lot of options in the 500-600ish cc area

A ZZR or and older ZX6r is a good choice. You do have a license right?

You should get in touch with zedx11 (aka Darrell), he is selling his ZX-10R in order to get a 14

Just kidding man, inside joke, DO NOT get a litre bike as your first ride!!!

If you don't mind starting small, get a 250. You can find used ones that they'll basically throw at you.

If you're worried about growing out if it too soon, get an EX500.

If you're on the crazy side, go for a used supersport 600 bike, but personally I do not recommend these as a first bike. This is from someone who got a 636 as their first bike

I recommend the 650R because its not too much to start with but will keep you enjoying it for years to come. I believe used ones are going for around 5 if not less.
