You can, but if you slam the clutch after a deceleration it spring loads on the suspension and hops up.

Lets not talk about redlining for a long while K? And maybe practice not going quite so close to the redline, really no need to as far as i can tell unless your in a hairy situation and/or trying to pass. God knows i never think of going up to the redline and letting the clutch out from a dead stop on my 6r.
And yea, the blip is your friend. Rev match and itll help a lot!

Even when i am racing, I don't redline shift my bike. (ZX10R). I have been known to run the bike hard up around 10K, but I blip the throttle to hit second. Shifting it at that mark into second will pull the front tire up every time. In fact the bike floats the front tire accelerating to high rpms in first. Not a bad thing on a racetrack, but dangerous as hell on any road. (1st gear will get you well over the speed limit).

On the smaller bike, you can take more chances. I have raced a few 125s and 250s and really beat hell out of the poor clutches on the track, but never on the street. I think something a lot of people don't realize is that the 250 hits 70 or 80 mph shifting through 2 or 3 gears where with my bike you would be looking down at 140 heading into 4th. Big difference.

I agree with the preloading statement. You can do it in a drag race, but any other time is just tearing up the tranny. The difference in actual 1/4 mile times on the street will be negligible. I can outrun most powershifters by using my clutch. I do sometimes over rev a bit and it is obvious, but probably does less damage to the bike than hitting the shifter so hard.

Down shifting is self explanatory. It isn't safe to lock up the rear tire. Try to use the engine a little more and shift at a lower RPM or use your brakes.

Take care,
Robert

He's never heard of valve float. He will if he keeps red lining it.

Clutch is the least of his worries.

All of this talk about the redline... You really should be shifting long before that.

Has anyone ever told you that you are too hard on equipment? - "Retard Alert" - When you decide to get rid of your 250 and move up to a 6 or 10,, make sure you have someone video you on your first ride... I would love to see that one

some of you provided useful information. others you sound like you are talking just o make yourself feel good and "experienced"

I know not to try the same stuff on a liter bike that I do on a 250

I am going to have fun on this bike and drive it hard sometimes, after all what is disposable income for?

I tried the preload thing and it was alright but i dont plan on ever doing that unless I go to a track.

Why do we have to be nice to people that are abusing their bikes? And then want to know the right way to abuse them? This board should be about helping people become better riders, not patting their hands and telling them a better way to dump their clutch.

There are plenty of other boards out there for this kind of behavior, let's not encourage it here.

Ok,, Ok,,, May be I was a little hard with the "Retard Alert" remark. Thinking back I guess I should have just advised him to get a really good life insurance policy.

Like I said before... I'm +10,000 in agreement with what was said, but I think the "retard alert" was a little wrong.

He's only a retard if he KNOWS that what he's doing is going to get himself hurt. He can be educated without being called a retard.

The only problem that I see with one of his reponses was that he indicates that he won't do it on a litre bike... but the problem is, the law of primacy ALWAYS kicks in... what you learn to do FIRST is what you will resort to when a snap decision must be made. A Ninja 250 is a Ninja 250 and only so much is going to come out of it... but "learning" to redline shift the 250 is going to cause big problems down the road on a 4 cylinder.

My question is, why would you want to? Have you ever seen a liter bike redlined? I've never ridden a GSXR-1K, but can tell you that redlining a ZX-10R means you're hauling butt in ANY gear. You DO know that modern literbikes will do 100 MPH in 1st gear, right? Even a modern 600 will hit 60's and 70's in 1st.

Have you ever watched Superbikes on the Speed channel? Listen to the lyrics of the theme song - something like, "Redline and then I drop the clutch..." Basically a recipe for getting the front wheel off the ground.
