I have a 2006 ninja500ex....my boyfriend and I changed the oil filter and oil a couple of days ago and we checked with the bike shop to see how much to put in...they told us 3.5 litres of oil...so we did and then went out for a ride..about an hour and a half later the oil light came on....the bike was driving fine the whole time no probs...so I pulled over, he checked the bike out and while he was taking the bike apart there was some bike info about the oil amounts and we put in a half litre too much soo we drained it to 3.4 and the light is still on??? the bike starts fine, sounds fine but the light is staying on??? anyone have any thoughts??

The 250 isn't powerful enough to be a stunt bike and isn't geared for it. If you wanted to regear it, it would do wheelies a little better.

Your post is difficult to read. Is that some texting version of English.

Yeah sorry about that, it's a bad habbit from txting in h.s. but i'm typing normal now.

yeah i realized that and i'm going to gear it up, but also to get better milage.
what do you suggest i get..a larger rear sprocket like a 60 tooth..or a larger front sprocket like a 15 tooth?

Changing your sprokets for more wheelie power will adversely effect your gas mileage if that is a concern. I don't know what your original sprockets are, but I would say the most common change in sprokets is down 1 in the front and up 2 in the back. Remember to much of a change in sprockets and you will have to change your chain length.

k learned my lesson of course after the issue, so I found out since my bike has been without riding for four months I should have had a full tank of gas with sta-bil in it...

Bought my used 08 in May and had it sit in the garage until I can get my permit, registration and insurance covered. June I did the oil change to mobil 40t full synthetic. Every Sunday when I visited my parents (where the bike is stored for now in their garage) I'd turn the engine over and let it idle for 5 minutes no problems. Meanwhile I kept it on stands and a battery charger.

Planned on riding it this weekend but after start the engine dies on idle. Only full choke will allow the engine to run, any slight decrease of choke or cutting high rpm throttle with choke off will kill the engine.

I had only half tank of fuel, so carbs probably need cleaning along with another oil change, change fuel filter, etc.

Is this (besides oil change) covered under the extended warranty? My mechanic experience is very limited so the shop will have to check it out, any idea of cost if not covered?

Also I have a 2bros slip on exhaust which sounds very rough...popping sounds and seems maybe rejet or screws need adjusting

Thanks

4 months sitting with the same gas.. likely carbs need cleaned bad. Stuck floats/clogged jets very likely causing the sounds for your exhaust too. Full carb clean with new floats will probably run around 200-250.

Should take care of the idle problem and exhaust sounds. no clue on whether covered by the warranty though sorry.

Before digging into the carbs. You said you had stabil in it and you let it run for 5 minutes or so when you was there and it only set for 4 months. My thoughts is that you started it and let it run on the choke every time? Possible that you fouled out the plugs a little. Pull the plugs out and see if they smell gassy or are wet. If so replace them with some new ones. Much cheaper to start out with. If you still have problems then look at the carbs.

nope didn't have stabil in it.... didn't know anything about it until searching the forums for idle issues and the Kawi customer rep mentioned it. Very common problem according to her, they get a lot of carb clean requests. Every weekend I had full choke for about 2-3 minutes then off position for another 2. It idled good in 1300rpm range until this weekend (then learning about carbs, stabil, etc.)

Tomorrow I'll drain the tank, carb, and check plugs. Then put some Gumout cleaner and fresh gas in it which I read helps. Some of the fuel is more than 4months old since I bought the bike used and never rode it. The cr mentioned the bike needs to be ridden and just idle can still affect the carb flow.

About the warranty, certainly not covered. Only covered if idling issues straight from dealer. Chalk it up to newb experience. Quoted $135 labor plus another 30 in parts, but could go much higher if internal parts are damaged.

thanks for help

swapped plugs out for ngk iridium's. They weren't wet but burned pretty well for only 600 miles on the bike. Bought used and never put a mile on it.
Emptied the fuel tank and carb's using the valves. The fuel wasn't dirty, just good beer color.
Added some gas, then put some seafoam then filled up with half a tank, put almost 3 ounces in the oil (recommended amount) and started the bike up. It's even worse, now the engine dies with full choke giving it some gas. A little white smoke from exhaust. An odd thing is sometimes giving it throttle, the rpm will drop then surge high, then drop back again. Will have the shop do an oil change even though I changed it about 2 months ago.

I'm hoping it's just the carbs clogged. This bike went from idling good one day to barely running the next.

The seafoam caused the white smoke. I have put it in the gas before but never the oil. I am very leary about adding anything to my oil in any vehicle. I have pulled engines apart with over 150,000 miles on them and they all had clean oil systems. Not since the Quaker State of the early 80's have I seen sludge in an engine and that was more from not changing the oil regularly.

I have a 2004 Ninja 500. A friend told me that you need to have the rpm's up in any gear range to keep the bike from carboning up. He says you have to run it near the red line. Is this true or what is the ideal rpm for each gear. I like the way it runs at 4000 to 5000 rpm, but is this to low. Thanks for any help.

That makes no sense at all. The engine does run great at higher RPM's but it is not necessary. Maybe running it occassionally up near red line will keep the carbon out but I wouldn't say all the time. Now once you ride this bike for a long time you may find yourself near the redline frequently desiring more and then it is time too look for a bigger bike if it is in the budget. The 500R is a great starter bike but it is a great economical bike also as an alternative to my 3/4 ton truck. I do wish for more bike but it is not in my budget. My next bike when I can get it will be a liter bike. This is my 5th bike and I have ridden for over 20 years and just didn't have a bike for a while and transitioned from cruiser to sport bike and thought I would go for he 500R to try out the sport bike and see if I liked it and get used to the different riding style before getting a larger more expensive one. I was always a sport bike guy who was riding on a cruiser. I found myself frequently dragging peg on cruisers.

Cool HI there 250 riders

I got a 06 , hadnt ridden in ten years or so , bought it in late april with 3700 miles on it. Now theres 8500 or so. Its been fun reliable transportaion for me.
Done the usual 250 mods and for where i live this is about the perfect bike. I can ride it hard and not worry to much about reckless driving tickets.
