I'm not sure what invoice is exactly, but I have heard it is around $2,700. There isn't much wiggle room. If you are looking for a "deal" best to buy a used model, there are usually a bunch of them at the end of the riding season and at the beginning.

According to kawasaki.com parts diagrams, the two fenders look exactly the same. The part number on the '92 is 35023-1183, and the number on the '02 is 35023-1391, but looking at them I assume that's just a difference in years that's causing the part number change*. I've had the part on my '90 off the bike, and it looks exactly as illustrated on both diagrams.

*Running the 1183 part number on RonAyers.com lists the part as being superceded to the 1391 number. It'll work. RonAyers lists it for $33.02, just for reference.

I've got an undamaged fender from an '02 if you want it. Where are you located Abunai? If you're in SoCal, come on by and you can have it for free. If you're elsewhere, we can work something out with the freight. I have no use for the fender, but am keeping my totalled bike for parts as I need them. (I totalled my precious '02 and replaced it with a green '06):

I asked a mechanic about it and said probobly the engine mounts. What do you guys think?
Hi Wingerzero and sorry for the delay in catching this. Loose motormounts would indeed cause ugly vibration, but these motormounts should have been taken care of by the dealership who did the initial service!
Are you the original owner of this bike?
If so, is this dealership the one you took it to for it's initial service?

If so, they should be apologizing profusely and taking care of this.
If you bought the bike used... well, it's the fault of the previous owner (or the dealership s/he took it to.)
Good luck and I hope you're bike is running okay now.

    Default Ninja Headlight Mods?

    Hi, Guys,

I bought my first street bike, a 2005 Ninja 500, a few months ago. I've been having a lot of fun with it despite the winter weather.

I have noticed a few things I would like to correct on it and I was wondering if other people had any tips.

    (1) Are there any headlight mods or aftermarket headlight assemblies? The stock one doesn't provide a lot of illumination for riding on unlighted streets.

    (2) Has anyone successfully used the helmet locks? I can't quite get my D rings in the slot because of their placement. Plus it's too close to the exhaust for comfort.

    (3) Does anyone know of non-factory repair manuals for 2005? I can't find any anywhere and I'm not too keen on spending $90 to get the old Kawasaki manual plus the EX500 supplement.

Thanks in advance for replies. After reading the posts on here, I feel a little prouder to own my "starter bike."

    Ahoy Discipulo.
    1) There is a knob underneath the tachometer, directly in front of the right fork. Point your headlight at the garage door and adjust it up a little, (but not too high, because then your high-beams are basically beaming signals to Mars.)

    2) The helmet locks are indeed tucked in there, but I can make my Arais fit. To make it easier, there are these little chrome extenders for the helmet lock that slide through the helmet's D-ring:

You can either keep it in your back pocket or in your bike's toolkit. They're available at every motorcycle shop I've ever been in, even Harley.

    3) Check Haynes and Clymer, BUT the Factory manual really is the best. That 90 bucks will soon pay for itself, when you consider maintenance fees (or possibly broken parts, stripped threads, incorrect order of assembly.) Why skimp on the important stuff like helmets and service manuals?

Peace, good luck and safe riding this weekend!

In a pinch (or as a permanent fix, depending on your preference ), you can also use a 12mm open end/box end wrench. You can slide the box end through your d-ring in your helmet and hook it to the helmet hook on the bike, and the open end of the wrench will hold the helmet on.

Default Differences between 2004 and 2005 EX 500?

Thanks for the replies on my previous question. One of the things I'd like to know is if there are any major differences between the 2005 (EX 500 D12) and the 2004 (EX 500 D11) Ninja's. I've had to do a bit of cross referencing to make sure parts that fit on the 2004s will work on my 2005. So far, everything I've looked at (spark plugs, brakes) is the same, but if there are any notable differences, I'd like to know. Plus, this will help in being able to use the 2004 repair manual.

    Thanks

'04 and '05 are exactly the same except for the color choices. Actually, they're the same from '87 to '93, and then from '94 to present.

In '94 the wheels went from 16" to 17", the forks changed from 16mm to 17mm (and hence the triple tree changed), the rear wheel got a disc brake (I believe the front disc may have changed sides but I'm not positive on that), the ignition changed a little (went to a pickup on the flywheel, the rest of the engine is the same), and at some point the exhaust went from black painted mufflers to chrome covered mufflers (but I'm not sure when that changed, and the exhaust is otherwise the same).

Any part from a '94 to an '07 will fit your '05. Most parts from any year EX500 (or GPZ500 overseas) will fit your '05, just check before buying.

Default 1st gen and 2nd gen ex500 plastics interchangeable?

    Hey guys,

    I have a 98 ex500 with cracked rear plastics.
I know the plastics look different on the older bikes, but would they still fit on the more recent ex500s?

    Thanks

What year are the plastics you're considering? The Ninja's changed in 1994, so anything after that should work w/ your '98 (someone correct me if I'm wrong... but I'm pretty sure of this). To be honest, however, I barely notice much of a difference between the 'newer' EX500's and the pre-'94 ones. I used to own an '88 EX500 which looked remarkably similar to the current ones, plastic-wise. Pre-'94 plastics might very well work... hopefully someone with actual experience can pipe up for ya.

Pretty much all the plastic is different, not by much, but its different. I think the only thing that might bolt up the same is the front fender and that would be it. You probably could make it work if you had to but thats alot of screwing around. Watch e-bay for plastic for your bike, I usually see it go for pretty cheap. Thats where I got most of the stuff for my bike, besides the racetech fork springs,I had to buy those new.

Default how to do a compression test on ex500?

    Hey guys,

I need to do a compression test on a ex500.

I know that i need a pressure gauge, but do i need some sort of adapter to attach the gauge to the sparkplugs?

Also, whats the best way to get to the spark plugs on the ex500?

And do any of you know what the compression value of a decent ex500 engine should be?

    Thanks

You should have an adapter in your pressure gauge kit, if you don't have the right size then you will have to make an adapter.

When you do the test just connect the tester and crank the engine for about 3 seconds and you will have your reading.

Like Jegzus250R said, you should have the adapter in the compression tester kit. The best way to get to the plugs is to take the tank off( that is about the only way your going to get to them). And the answer for your last question is 120+ psi on each cylinder. When you do the test, let the cylinder your doing the test on hit compression stroke 3 to 4 times before you take a reading. Hope this helps ya out,if you need anything else, just ask
