My 250 is off by about 5 at about 40 MPH (fixed "your speed is" installation on my road indicates 35 when the speedo indicates a hair below 40 MPH, 39 MPH real speed indicates as about 43 MPH, etc); I think that it's probably a similar proportion (10% or greater) further up the dial.

I got out my GPS unit, dropped it in my tank bag's map pocket and took a ride to check the speedo the other night. I kept wondering why I was getting passed on a stretch of 55 mph highway when I was going an indicated 65...

At an indicated 40 mph the GPS showed 37-38
At 65 it showed 61-62
at 75 it showed 71

It seems to be off by a percentage instead of a solid #. I'll try to do a test involving higher freeway speeds one of these nights.

BTW, don't use my numbers to try to get out of a speeding ticket!

I have observed a general percentage of 6-8% on most 250's/500's. I used a sigma bicycle speedometer to get a corrected reading. only costs 20 bucks, wish I had a GPS though....

I had a sigma bike computer on mine until it died for some reason.

The sigma would read 70mph when the stock speedo would say 63mph.

I know mine is off, and it irritates me. Hubby's bike must be off too. I usually ride behind him, and get irritated when my speedo shows 5mph under the limit, which means it's prolly closer to 10 under! lol. I'll have to look into something. Anyone know where I might find a little digital clock, that is water proof? I bought one from K-mart, not water proof, took the bike to work, whatda know, it rains, and clock is dead! Didn't even have it on there 24 hours!

nah, no clock is nice as long as you don't have to be anywhere. I like riding on my days off without knowing the time. That way I just focus on riding around and finish when I finish

It's fine if I don't have to be anywhere, but if I have to run a few errands before work, I need to know my time limit!

Default MY 2003 Ninja 250 . twin cam 8 valve.

I got this bike from my syster and she hasen't used it for 2 years now. the bike looks brand new. Anyway... I placed a new battery because the old one was dead and no luck. No light, the horn didn't even work there's just no indication of any power at all. everything looks good and by good i mean not sign of pull cables or damage. Is there something I should be looking for? I don't know what to look for, this is my first bike and I want to ride it as soon as possible. I tested the fuses in the fuse box and they were all working. Could it be the ignition that is not working? what else could it be? HELP!!!!

I'll have to take a look, hubby suggested it once, but I went with a stick on one. I had it right where you have yours! I'll have to go there today, thanks!

I'm not trying to be a smart arse or anything, but did you put acid in the new battery and put it on a trickle charger overnight? Start with the simplest things first (if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras). Is the battery intalled correctly? (+ wire to + post and - wire to - post) The first battery I bought for mine was backwards, I had to take it back and get the right one ordered in. Double check all the connections, look for corrosion and frayed wires ... etc, etc. The ignition switch may be FUBAR, you could try taking it apart and cleaning it with some electrical contact cleaner.
