Looked all over for similar questions... no luck
I have a 1986 Ninja 1000r (A)series (GPZ)it is almost mint, with one annoyance. After running in traffic or through town for short distances at low speeds, when coming back on to throttle bike misses, sputters, backfires... Tac goes all over from 40000 - 60000 - 0 - 1000 - 0... bike does not stall but will backfire several times and then seems fine for awhile then starts all over again. Had bike "Professionally" checked and "repaired" $3500.00 in total - on 2 occassions Full gambit of "clean and replace"... carb done twice... airbox... regulator... Started acting up again, also noticed this time my fuel gauge is fluctuating up and down while bike is acting this way... seems to be alright at highway speed... have been checking rpm's... at 5000rpm in 5th gear, running 95-100km/hr... shifting at approx. 6000rpm... thinking I was bogging engine down, no difference... I love the old "Tank" and it is a sweet "OLD" ride, but Its hard to relax and enjoy with this nagging issue... ANY Help appreciated greatly....

I have wanted a ZRX since they came out. Had a Yamaha FZR750RR at the time the ZRX came out, but lived in California and the first year, the ZRX wasn't available there. Funny I almost came to New Mexico to buy one for a guy who worked at the Kawasaki shop in Monterey Cal where I lived at the time! I ended up moving to NM and now, have my own. it is a 2003 and has a little over 7000 miles on it and has just a Kerker and jet kit. Anyone know of a more comfortable seat? The stocker is great around town, but i did 470 miles on it the first day I had it so that taught me the stock seat is not up to the long haul task!

other than that, I LOVE the bike.....everything about it!

does sound like a ignitor box or some other electrical problem to me.
