You can copy down the VIN and call a local Kawi shop. They should be able to tell you what model it is by the VIN.

Default What a trip!

Whew! I made my trip to Colorado Springs from Arizona. For those non-Southwest U.S. folks, that's about a 1750 mile round trip. Made it in 3 days. I can tell you several things:
  1. The 2002 ZX9R is very comfortable on long rides.
  2. The Alpinestars SMX2 gloves are comfortable, with a lot of air flow, but not so much that they can't handle 60 degree weather.
  3. Michelin Pilot Power tires are fantastic. I will have to wait for a wear report, but I have front and back, and they hold the road incredibly well.
  4. A 2002 ZX9R will get almost exactly 142 miles before it hits the reserve.
  5. Get a throttle bar for long rides. Don't leave it on, but set it to give your throttle hand a break for a couple of minutes. This will help a lot.
  6. Lastly, I can't wait for another long road trip. I'm thinking the Pacific Coast Highway...
That's it. What a ride, had too much fun, really enjoyed the open road. I'm looking forward to getting a GPS system mounted, and riding some of the less traveled roads.

Cheers!

Man, I used to ride around town, which is pretty big, but some friends and I have been taking weekend day-rides, so this was pretty cool. I've really been enjoying these rides, and that last one was so cool I'm really looking forward to a new destination!

You should be fine. Once the gas light goes on, go put some 90 in there and say 3 Hail Mary's.

You should be okay. It'll run rough, depending on the compression a ZX6 puts out. The higher the compression, the higher the octane needed. It won't ruin it by any means, but it won't put out the same power while that 87 is in it. So, drop the boost in or don't, it can't hurt.

Hope you'll stick around... and remember to put the proper gas in your tank!

Interesting... in my 636 (I live in Italy) the manual says to use minimum 95 octane fuel...

Default zx6r frame question

I have an 00 zx6r that I'm building up for a track bike. I bought the bike badly wrecked and it looks like I will need a frame. Does anyone know if other frames besides 00-02 zx6r will work and if so what are they? I think the 05-06 zzr is the same but not sure. How about the 00 zx9r?

Thx,
Mark

Default 2004 ZX636 Questions

I just bought a 636 for my son but unfortunately I don't have the owners manual so some questions:

1) Does the key have a transponder? I want to have a spare key made.
2) How do I adjust the shift light?
3) How do I tell if the exhaust header are standard or aftermarket? and...

4) Is there a place where I can download an owners manual?

I'm sure your son thinks you're the best dad in the world right now

Yes the key does have a transponder, but if the guy you bought it from didn't give you the mother key (it's red) you're in trouble... to make spares you have to replace the entire key/transponder block which I hear sets you back several hundred dollars...

To adjust the shift light, keep the mode and reset buttons pressed for 3 seconds. First you have to choose the light brightness with the mode button (not so bright/very bright/off) then press reset and select the number of revs at which it will come on. Keep pressing mode, the revs will increase and then decrease once you get to 15,5K. Once you have chosen the revs keep mode pressed for 2/3 seconds and you're set. BTW, it's bulls.hit that you can see it with your peripheral vision, it's pretty useless!

Don't know about the rest...

Great thanks for the info. He doesn't know it yet. I'm storing it untill his birthday in 4 weeks time but I would hope he will be thrilled Yip did not get the master key so I guess I'm screwed. I'll go by the dealer later today and find out what this will set me back. Why people cannot just look after stuff I don't know

What a cool dad.
What year? 2003-2004
No to 1 and 2 (never seen it)...Does the bike have a PC? If not then not likely a full system. If the bike has a slip on exhaust the pipe that comes from the header to the can could have come with the exhaust. Then again mine is a highmount. The header itself is not replaced in a slip on.

It's a 2004. I've just been to the dealer and apparently our SA model does not have a transponder so I just ordered the blank which I will have cut. No there is no PC. The can is a Yoshi and I suspect that it is only a slipon. I've been riding it around today to get the roadworthy and paperwork sorted out. What a pleasure If he is not carefull he is going to land up with my 1000K6 and I'm taking the 636
