I'm working on a '94 ZX9. The motor was torn down about 3 years ago and now the cams and timing gear have rust on them. Also, number 1 and 4 cylinders have a fairly deap groove from rings gone bad. So, where is the best place to get a rebuild kit? I'm used to building car/truck engines and have never priced out motorcycle engine parts.
Also, I've heard it's possible to mount a newer style (98-03?) ZX9 motor with the help of some aftermarket motor mount. Is this true? What would be needed? The wire harness and computer? That it or am I trying to make it too simple? I customize cars for a living so fabricating mounts won't bother me. But I don't have an engine right here to compare and want to get some advice before spending the money. I know I can buy a newer engine for about 600-800 bucks with low miles. Just trying to figure out the most cost-effective way to get this thing up and running. A stock '94 ZX9 would be plenty fast for what I'm going to use it for. Any help would be appreciated. Are there any other after market mirrors available for the '97 ZX-9R besides the Pigspotters (they stopped making version 1 and I don't want to buy version 2 because it has LEDs).
I have to have something on there to be legal, but the stock ones are so bulky and don't flow with the new flush mount LEDs on the front or the rear integrated LED. |

Hi, I'm new to the forum and to Ninja's! I just upgraded from a Honda 400cc to the mentioned Kwak. Are there any manuals around for servicng, any ideas about which engine oil brand?, what about frame sliders? as I am reluctant to drill my fairing...

I have a 1993 ZX-6. I just had a major tune up on it two weeks ago. I got on it yesterday after not riding for 4 days and it started fine got it on the freeway up to 80 mph it started sputtering and shut off then would not crank. I had to keep pressing the primer button to get enough gas in it to get it back home. It just won't take the gas. It will only crank if I press the fuel primer button and hold it for 5 secs about ten times. Then it will run that gas out and shut off. Any suggestions?
Thanks Tom |

I have a 1985 Ninja 900R GPZ with over 48,000 miles. I get the same fuel rate use, but I am also 6'1 and 270lbs. I have sqeezed out 50mpg by killing engine, costing (hyper mileing) I normally get around 45mpg. (But I am squeezer-geezer). |

not sure how to post a new post so i tried this. I recently purchased a 1985 zx9 and broke the lower fairing ( belly plate ) unloading it off my truck. (bummer) I found one for sale on ebay for a 1984 zx9. does anyone know if the lower fairings are the same for the 84 and 85 zx9. Thanks Timmy

I know this is a fair old link, but prvtdetdave, but i have pondered some ways of maybe getting better fuel economy.
How u ride the machine is first thing and most simplest to determine how much fuel is consumed of course as i'm sure u know already. Perhaps taking to a dyno testing shop, so u can see how the bike is performing as it is, and see if can be improved etc. Obviously trying to take off any unecessary weight off the bike itself, simply done as well. Aerodynamics of the bike are important when going at cruising/ higher speeds, so maybe try improving that. Getting a good air filter/ cleaner, a K&N one is good if keeping the standard air box on the machine. Getting a better spark is good, and i have found that iridium plugs are great, as well as newer or better spark coil leads. Simple things as im sure u know, like regular oil and coolant changes, maintanance etc u know. Bigger oil cooler and radiator, and higher performance cooling fan helps keep the temperature down if in hot climate, I know GPZ900's like to run quite hot really. The oil cooler from a zxr600 i think is bigger, and has same connctions, and the zx1000rx radiator works, but there is modding to be done to make them fit. If u have the money, u can buy larger after market kits etc anyways. My fan is from a cbr1000 fireblade i think, as it is very efficient and sounds like a turbine engine lol. I also drilled extra hole in the thermostat which helps as well. A switch to the fan is also good cos it means u can keep an eye on the temperature as well as the normal system doing it. Maybe consider changing the sproket gearing ratios. More drastically, try modding air cleaner box to have openings to scoop more air in. Of course this is difficult to do with carb machines as the fuel jetting has to be changed to allow for the forced air flow, but can be acheived. I did attempt this once, but it didnt like it as was getting too much air, but when i put my hand slightly over the intake part i made, it seemed to perform surpisingly well! So maybe an external butterfly valve could have done it. I never got the chance to do it really and ended up selling the bike. Bought another one tho hehe. Anyways, more drastically still, i am currently making a HHO generator at the moment as cheaply as possible, and am going to disguise it as a left exhaust pipe lol. I have also still to test a low power speed controlled high RPM brushless electric turbo fan system (blimey thats a mouthful), as my bike has a stage 3 dyno-jet kit on it and S&B individual pod filters at the moment. I intend to put the turbo and external cone air filter on it soon as i insure the bike again. Very drastic measures i spose wuld be to maybe dont eat a lot before a long ride, and maybe go to the bathroom to get rid of extra load hehe Lastly and drastically still, and i dun wanna be rude, but maybe drop a bit of weight.... Na man, forget that last one! Just get a V twin with a lot of torque and gud fuel economy and tune the balls out of the gpz if u got the cash of course hehe. Well, i hope this helps and is not too much to read, or too late. Happy riding dude! John.

All good advise John (loki333)
I do get good mileage considering my weight (Lost over 50lbs since June) I was hitting the reserve at 186-189miles and then another 23-25 miles before reserve would run out. I will putting the girl to bed for the winter soon and these old bones seem a little achier at 4c and 65mph for an hour or more. Ah but yes she was getting hot in town. I also note many folks only add to the resevior and not the radiator both should be topped as in the case with mine I also add some bars leak at the beginning of every season after a flush and fresh fluid. The shop will take a send my fliuds to a recycler costs nothing I did discover the oil and bug build up. I always noticed toward the end of seaoson I could tell the temp engine running higher and the ambient temp lower, so remove the farrings/cowle and back spray the radiatior, do not use a power sprayer as the fins may bend. I also like your modification Ideas, those are great. I also installed a manual fan switch and just let it run while riding. Take care all of you. I hope to make it to the Ilse of Man Run in 09. |

But then it depends on what bike u ride and how it is set up. If its fuel injected, then u may have to re-map the CPU, or buy one that can be re-mapped. Similarly with carburated vehicles, u might have to change the jetting etc. If it was me, i'd just do it and see. I've cut my exhaust almost in half and it still works ok, just bit louder which is what i wanted hehe. John

Well I have decided to sell my 07 ninja 250 and get something a bit older and a bit more stable/comfortable for commuting. I do about 175miles a week between cities for work and school. Just want something a bit more comfortable since the suspension on the ninja 250 isnt the best.
Just wondering how do the older 1993-97 ZX6/ZX-6Rs hold up? Also any difference between the ZX6 and ZX-6R moniker? Any advice? Are there any known issues with these bikes or just as long as they have been maintained I'm all good? Thanks |
