Default Revised Topic of 08' ZX6-R Exhaust

So I originally posted a Thread about seeing if I could get rid of that big and bulky resignator on the back of my bike. I had figured since the ZX6-R has TWO resignators, taking off the back one wouldnt be a problem.

So hours go by on contemplating on how I can do this.

Idea # 1 : Straight-pipe from the lower resignator, at the bottom of my ferring.
(Did not work)

Idea # 2 : Just take off rear resignator and leave "as is".
(Did not work)

Idea # 3 : Remove rear resignator, and straight pipe to the rear end of the bike.

Idea 3 had worked!! It sounds great, low end has picked up quite abit, and has a really nice throaty sound. Now if I can just figure a way to relocate my rear turn signals so that they do not melt within the 4 minute ride I took

My question here is..Does anyone KNOW if the rear resignator is for ADDITIONAL backfire control, or if it is the ONLY backfire control?

I just need any, if any is available...ANY information on what exactly the 08 ZX6-R rear resignator does, and how it affects the bike if not there.

I had spoken to a guy at a near by Cycle Store, and he claims that if I continue riding without the rear resignator, I will end up burning my valves?

Any help on this would be great.

Chris

What is a resignator?

The 07/08 ZX-6R have a catalytic converter or "cat" (that's right underneath the engine that you can see through the fairing cut-outs) and a muffler or "slip-on" which is the bit up underneath the tail where the exhaust gasses exit.

The cat is what primarily keeps flames from shooting out the back of the bike (though that's not it's intended purpose, it's just a side-effect) - I haven't read of anyone having problems when just replacing the slip-on, but I have seen video of flames out the back from full exhaust installations (headers back).

Anyone who tells you that you're going to burn valves if you change the exhaust should be avoided because they're idiots.

its spelled resonator...and resonators are used to quiet down exhausts. the ZX6 has a cat and a muffler, but no resonators. and the muffler is basically chambered like a Flowmaster (ive seen one cut open). no packing or anything, while a slip-on will be straight-through and have fiberglass, or some similar material, packing to tone down the exhaust noise.

a straight pipe is going to be LOUD. just a warning...local law enforcement might not like it, especially in Cali where i think the dB limit is 95? i think we squeek by at 94 with the stock muffler.

glad i live in Mississippi...i could run open header and not have to worry

I have removed the undertail, and redefined my exhaust for straight pipe, and relocated my rear fender. I will post pictures in the next day or 2 when I have more time. I will also try to get a video of sound without the rear muffler.

Thank you to both of you for that information.

that is NOT a muffler and is a high flow cat. u are allowing alot more air flow threw the exhaust and it is set up to have some back pressure. the ecu can compensate for some of the air flow but i dont know about that much air flow. u can basically put a slipon on with out flashing the mapping but as soon as u put a full system on u have too flash the map. or if u add a slipon and a hi flow air filter u will have to flash the map for it. its youre bike and u can do what ever but id get a nice slip on. every on says my muzzy sounds sick and its loud, but keeps its self just under the gp sound restrictions. i found a whole system for my bike in TI for 800 bucks on 58cycles.com

It does have packing.
But very thin.

I do realize I am over the dB sound level. But not having a muffler on it...You're saying with more airflow my bike is suffocating itself? I dont understand what you're telling me as far as ruining my bike or damaging it.

what i am saying is that the ecu is made to only correct some of the flow of air and by not having some back pressure u are taking a chance on pitting you're valves. u can get a nice sound out of most racing slip ons and not have to worrie about the bike running too lean
