My initial plan this year was to use the EX500 on the track. In order to do that I'll need to invest about $600 in to it (upgraded springs, brakes, etc).
I'm also going to be upgrading the ZX6 with everything suspension wise. Maybe a full exhaust later, but that is way down and the bottom of the list. And here is where the conundrum gets started - Both of my girls want to start riding too. two small dirt bikes and one adult size dirt bike and gear are needed. I'll pickup used bikes and can track down gear without too much trouble. We'll get new helmets though - those arent things to save money on. Anyway, money isnt really a problem. But at the same time, I could sell the 500 and use it to buy the a lot of the stuff I need for the girls to ride. I'm really back and forth on this. The idea of learning to ride the 500 fast is very appealing. It will force me to enter turns a lot faster than I do on the ZX6. However, learning to ride a dirt bike plus the potential family fun is also really appealing. So which way would you go?

I'm going to have to say your family is more important. You will want as much safety gear as you can get riding dirt. I use helmet, goggles, boots, knee and elbow braces and a chest protector. Getting hit with roost hurts. So does any crash impact.

The ZX6 is going to be developed too. Probably a lot more than the 500 would be.
I started riding in the summer of 06. Because of schools and stuff I made a lot of progress really fast. However, having never ridden on dirt I'm still lacking some stuff people with that have that experience take for granted. Having a bike sliding around under you constantly probably helps develop a much better sense of traction. I won't be skipping out on any of the gear. I'm too chicken to ride without and the possiblities of the dirt seem to offer even more ways to break, bust and bruise things. So the girls will definately be getting all the armor and stuff we can get.
