I just recently got a 86 ninja 900 and was wondering was is the best way to increase the power?

I am considering changing the chain and sprocket and doing a tune up on my 02 ZX6R. This will be my first time working on a bike. I plan to go from 15/40 to 14/40. Is it worth it to do it my self or should I get ripped of by a shop. Any advice would be great.

My bike is idling high. sometimes can jump all the way to 3000 while stopped and in neutral even. The only way it goes back between 1and2 is if I twist the throttle forward and it calms down but when I let up...goes high again. I am thinking throttle needs adjusting or if it's a fuel mixture...
