09 C14 ABS comes away unscathed in harrowing event
One of those beautiful Sunday rides, weather perfect, the day perfect. Traveling back roads out in the country no traffic, no cows, no nothing, cruising along at a sedate 60 MPH with the wife on back.
Long straight, no traffic in sight just a peaceful ride, come up on a lone sign, "Gravel", ok pretty common around here, except nope the sign really means Road Ends, only gravel ahead.
Going 60, drop off the regular asphalt on a purely bedrock, gravel surface, drops on either side into a 10 foot ditch, start sliding sideways, correct once, gas off now, start sliding again this time towards the ditch, gently coax back into the middle, third and final slide, gas off rear brake very gently applied, hand away from front brake even considering ABS.
Take approx. 200 yards to come to a very slow stop. Very hair raising ride. Slowly take a return to the asphalt, stop, flip up shield look at wife. Wife says "That wasn't good back there was it?" I say "Nope we almost went down 3 times".
Immediately drove to local biker bar and grill, ordered a pitcher of Newcastle and a large order of chili cheese fries and sit there for the next 3 hours contemplating life. It was an interesting end to my Sunday.
Going back today in my truck to take pictures and stop by the local CHP and Sheriff offices to file a complaint. It's a good thing I wasn't on my cruiser or my sports bike as it would of turned out a whole lot different IMO.
