"supreme filteration would logically (depending on media type of course) would flow less oil (GPM). "
That statement is untrue at face value. However,"logical" that may seem, it is not a true statement for flow. The size of the filtration material as well as the size and number of "openings" along with the AREA of the filteration material will determine flow restriction. Physics not "logic" are the factors that limit FLOW. As filter elements are NOT ALL equal in area better filteration is possible with greater flow. They are not mutually exclusive. |

To a point.
The Pure-One is reported to be VERY restrictive, and upon examination, the media pleats are packed very tightly together. In theory, 600sq/in will filter as effectively for a longer time period and flow better than 300sq/in, but if that means that the pleats are packed too tightly, then flow will be reduced. There needs to be a balance between a fine "enough" grade of media (restrictive), coupled with enough surface area to allow adequate flow, with enough housing volume to keep it from being packed into a solid mass once it swells from soaking in oil.

Has there ever been (I'm sure there has) a study done to determine what the ratios of contaminants that are meant to be caught in the filter are? What, in essence, are we talking about? Metal shavings are in there, and a major reason for the moves I have made, but what RATIO of metal shavings is there to OTHER contaminants? Are the other contaminants metallic in any way? What other particles are in the oil that are meant to be trapped by the filter?

The filter is intended to trap any insolubles larger than about 30 microns.
Some filters are pretty effective down to about 10. WHAT does it trap? Primarily larger metallic wear debris and "dirt" that has bypassed the air filter and contaminated the oil from the breather and blown by the rings.

owned two harley, both had a magnetic plugs for the oil and tranny. like the idea..first couple of changes you generally have real fine shavings..nice to know that it wasn't getting into the internals. I actually thought all bikes came stock with them.
