Default Anyone else running a magnetic drain plug?

Just wondering if anyone else is running a magnetic drain plug on their Kawi. I just installed a Project Kics, magnetic drain plug hoping that will keep most of the small metal particles from getting sucked into the motor or elsewhere. It is made of very strong aircraft aluminum and has a very strong rare earth magnet. This is what it is, the thread pitch for my ZX-6 was 12x1.5mm dont know about other model Kawi's.

It is a great idea! Can't hurt! I have run them for years on race cars and work trucks.

I run them on all my bikes, cars, and trucks....I find a good place to buy them is also on ebay.

If you have a vehicle with lots of drain plug to internal parts clearance.
Another option is just buying a high quality magnet and glueing a piece to your existing drain plug.

I have one installed on my KLR, it seems to catch very small particles.

For the bikes with external oil filters a company at FilterMAG: Magnetic Oil Filters finish the Job Your Filter Started. makes a type that snaps on to the filter body with strong magnets and is supposed to collect metal particles inside the oil filter.

I like your thinking but look at the photo how the bolt is made around the magnet. There is no way I would glue anything to anything inside my hot, oily engine. You could create a problem and suck the magnet thru the engine.

The make high quality plugs with larger magnets but there is no chance of those seperating and going thru your engine or clutch.

These plug magnets are not simply glued into plug, its pressed in and epoxied in the base, the magnet is about 12mm deep in the bolt. This is the only way you can make a drain plug without having a stupid stick poking out like the cheap ones on ebay. This has stock clearances as the bolt is the same dimensions as the old one. The cheap ones you find on ebay will only work on bikes and cars with not any mechanical part near it, since they poke out a extra 1" or so over stock if there is like a crank or whatever spins in the area it will hit it.

That is a great idea as well, but the idea behind it is to catch the particles before it even gets to the filter down at the sump area.

The magnet on mine only pokes out about 1/8-1/4"... and IMHO, it provides more area for the magnet to "grab crap".

Does it help? Tough call. I know it DOES catch iron filings, but would the filter not have caught them in the first place? Like was said above... it can't hurt.

I have it but I usually drain my oil via the side drain with the pre-filter screen. I get more oil out of it and it's harder to strip it as well. I use magnets on the oil filter instead. More oil flow plus the junk stays in the filter when I toss it. To me it seems a win/win situation that way.

Well the idea of the drain plug for me was to catch the filings before it goes through the strainer. That way i can get to the little parts before it goes through the strainer to the filter.

My bike was made in 1976, and if has a magnetic drain plug. I just always thought that it was a stock item provided by the thoughtful designers and engineers at Ma Kaw. Still works, catches tiny little pieces of steel.
Maybe it's an aftermarket plug?
Edit:
Woops, I thought this thread was posted in the Vintage Forum. My Voyager doesn't have a mag plug. Just changed the oil last weekend, so I can remember what the plug looks like.

Just bought the Filter Mag... I think it's a great concept. The plug would probably work to some degree as well, but I can see this performing better, and it's worth the extra $20 to me. Maybe both is the perfect answer...

The nice thing about the Filtermag is that you don't need to clean it every now and then, so there's NEVER a need to remove the oil drain plug on a Vulcan 900/1500/1600. The crap goes into the landfill with the filter

I use and recommend using a magnetic drain plug.
Here is where I ordered mine from:
Motorcycle Drain Plugs Motorcycle Honda Yamaha Kawasaki Suzuki Engine Plug!

Any bike that has the transmission gears using the crankcase oil should run a magnetic drain plug.
A neo-mag on the oil filter is also a good idea, but having the drain plug magnet is even better. ( I run both!! kind of a belt and suspenders approach)
