I have a problem and there is no point *****-footing around, because I need help or my bike is going to mold over. I bought a 900 Classic knowing that the man of the hour might not be around to ride with once it was here. Okay. Understood. However, I had hoped that he would help me learn to ride. He's gone. (He lingers just enough to promise to teach me how to ride, but never finds the time.) My bike is so beautiful that it is like the pole dancer of all bikes (in my eyes, of course), but I haven't been able to take it out, because I can't take the MSF course for another 2 weeks and I don't want to screw up and drop it. I have a good collection of man-views on this, but would appreciate some help from the wiser and more cunning sex. I'd love to advertise for a tutor, but we can guess what that would get me.

As painful as it is, if you dont have someone you trust, a lot, to help teach you wait for the class! I had my bike sittin in a shed for a week or so before I was even able to go ride it around a parking lot. I had a friend ride it out there for me and taught me the very basics. By the time I took the class I had already been on the street a few times by myself, but this was only because he was very patient with me and I trusted him, and I had riden with him so I knew he wasnt crazy and was going to kill me! lol
So if you dont have someone close you can trust just be patient and wait. You will be happier in the end. Why chance it and possibly drop your new bike and get hurt? Good luck! |

Oh yes you can!!!
In fact, that's the best place for a guy to be!!! Hey BhamJune, it'll be hard, but be patient and wait for the course!! Then you won't need anyone to show you how to ride cuz you'll already have learned the tools you need to be able to practice and learn on your own!! Good luck and be safe!!

Advice from a guy: Put on engine guards and practise standing it up from laying on its side before you hit the streets after the basic course.

BhamJune:
My guy tried to teach me to ride, and I could do so up to a point. But he always got the bike ready to go, so I didn't even learn how to use the choke until I took the MSF course! Nor did I have a clue about the gas on/off/reserve switch! I was so GLAD when I finally—really—learned about a bike and how to ride during the MSF training. Have patience and wait for the course. Two weeks is a very short time in the scheme of things. |

Wait for MSF, go in with the attitude that you'll learn as much as possible and let your brain be like a sponge. Don't scratch the pretty bike prematurely.
My local community college has all male MSF instructors. My local H-D dealer has several women RidersEdge MSF instructors and the training director is a woman. They try to pair a man and a woman instructor for each class and many of their instructors also do private lessons. |

My new 9 sat in the garage for two weeks before I completed my MSF class. Didn't as much as start it up as I'd heard that firing up and revving a brand new engine was a bad idea w/out having it under load.
Just hang out in the garage with her, and keep her cleaned off. Learn on the 125cc job's you'll have in class, then take your new baby to a large parking lot close by after you have your license and insurance and practice some of the same moves you did in class to get a feel for the larger bike. |

The best advice I can give is this, wait for the course. While your waiting learn all you can from the owners manual: fluids, starting, etc... I would also follow Jake '53's advice in a controlled space. The more you understand before you go into the course the more you will get out of it.
