Default Kids and riding

I've been riding bikes for a while now and my kids are just crazy about them. They can't get enough and beg for rides constantly. I'm just wondering at what age did everyone let their kids ride? I remember being a kid and my unlce taking me everywhere on his little honda 250. I was probably 7 or 8. My kids are 4 and 2 and they are a little young but just wondering when everyone started letting their kids ride with them?

My 5 year old can't reach the pegs, so he's not getting on. My 8 year old just got his leather jacket, now I need to order his helmet.

I don't have kids, but the neighbor kids always ask me for a ride and their parents have been cool with it knowing how I ride and that we keep it nearby. My niece and nephew as well.

It's not so much the age as it a few other things. Kind of like riders. My mother-in-law has been riding for about 30 years. However, in the last 15 years, she's put on 15,000 miles total. I've eclipsed that in the last three years (hush...we can only ride a few months out of the year and I can't commute on it!).

With that being said, first and foremost is if they can reach the pegs. After that, it boils down to the individual themself. One of the kids I won't take because he won't sit still and listen. Makes it unsafe. The others I have no issues with taking because they listen well and don't try to move around all the time. I don't go very far with any of them so I don't take much else in to consideration myself (they all have their own helmets and such they use).

My older son can reach the pegs. I guess i'm worried about him being able to hang on. I'll probably give it a few more years. Too bad though because he loves it.

Your four year old can reach the pegs? Wow! I would venture to guess that's likely a bit too young due to their attention span at that age...or lack there of. Start with short rides around the block to get them used to it and as they get older and a more "responsible" passenger, then you can extend pass that.

Mine are 7 and 5-1/2 now but started at 6 and 4-1/2, and we go for short, low-speed tours around the neighbourhood. My criteria was ability to reach the pegs, and my comfort with whether or not I felt that they understood the importance of hanging on. Until I was comfortable with it, it was short, low-speed runs around the BLOCK, before we expanded out to the whole neighbourhood! We have a circle on our street, and we just went around that...

My 12 year old boy rides with me all over the place. He's already picking out what bike he wants when he turns 16 (it'll be 18 if mom has a say). One of the best passengers I've ever had on my bike.

My 6 year old boy can reach the pegs but isn't real good about sitting still. He tends to look around and point at things - which throws off the balance.

I now have a week old daughter, but she can't reach the pegs yet. She will fit in the saddle bag, though.

Thanks! I just got back to work today, which is why my # of postings is up this week!

I haven't made an "official" announcement anywhere.

Everyone is doing great! Mom and I are a little tired today, but that is to be expected. I did miss two of the best weather days to ride, but wouldn't trade it for anything!

Hey at least the kid has on leather chaps, jacket, and gloves along with the helmet. My son was riding with his grandparents on his grand fathers electa glide when he was 4. He put highway pegs on and mounted them high enough for him to reach. With the wrap around arm rests and back rest he was nice and snug. My son started riding his own honda 50 2 days after his 5th birthday.

As soon as they were able to touoch the pegs and hold on we went on rides. My daughter wants to ride her own so bad.I have to lock the garage or her and her friends wont leave it alone, or me for that matter, begging for rides. I plan on buying a used dirt bike for them this summer

I have been riding for 40 years and have a strict policy of never taking children on a motorcycle. My own kids included.
My belief is that a passenger must be old enough to be responsible for there own life before I will risk there life on a motorcycle.
Cars are a dangerous enough form of transportation for children but risking a child's life on a "motorcycle ride" is out of the question.
Children do not have the ability to hang on in the event of a sudden evasive maneuver in traffic regardless of whether they can touch the pegs.

In my opinion.
