Default Motorcyles Most Likely to Crash, Be Stolen

Motorcyles Most Likely to Crash, Be Stolen

A recent study of claims data on more than two million motorcycles insured over the past three years by The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, the country's largest motorcycle insurer, uncovers the makes and models of bikes most and least likely to be stolen or crashed.

Motorcycle Thefts:

Most Likely to be Stolen

1. Suzuki GSX-R Series
2. Yamaha YZF Series
3. Honda CBR Series
4. Suzuki Hayabusa
5. Kawasaki Ninja Series

Least Likely to be Stolen

1. Suzuki Savage
2. BMW R1200C
3. Honda Rebel Series
4. Honda Shadow Series
5. Yamaha V-Star

Motorcycle Crashes:

Most Likely to be Crashed

1. Suzuki GSX-R Series
2. Kawasaki Ninja Series
3. Suzuki TLR
4. Yamaha YZF Series
5. Honda CBR Series

Least Likely to be Crashed
1. Yamaha Virago Series
2. Honda Rebel Series
3. Suzuki Savage
4. Harley-Davidson FXR
5. BMW R1200C

So what does this mean for bikers? If you choose a motorcycle that's involved in more crashes or is stolen more often you'll most likely pay more for insurance.

What it means is that if you ride a Suzuki Savage, you are feeling pretty low right about now.

Does the Ninja series include the 250 and 500? I've been quoted very low rates for both and it's been my understanding that they aren't as desirable to steal do to their low replacement cost and lower cost of replacement parts. In addition, the joyriders tend to go for larger displacement bikes - as do a lot of less responsible new riders who are more likely to wreck in their first 6 months to a year of owning a bike.

I think the 250's are safe from this list.

Statistics show the results of theft...that's for sure...but somehow I still try my best to keep my 1500 under lock and key as best I can.

The reason why the bikes that are most likely to be stolen are also the ones most likely to be crashed is because the reason bikes are stolen is to sell the expencive farings to people who just crashed their brand new baby. You'd be suprised how much hot stuff goes over Ebay.

I'd be thinking, "D**m, no wonder I can't get anyone to steal this thing, even when I leave it the Bronx, at night, with the keys in the ignition!" Either that or I'd be saying, "I'll bet I could save a bunch of money on my bike insurance....."

It's too bad insurance companies don't open up their systems like airline booking. Wouldn't it be great if there was an expedia.com for insurance? I know in Canada, kanetix.com is somewhat close, but it doesn't cover that many firms.
