shaft for belt drive 82 440

Hello,
I was looking around and have not come across this. I bought a first bike about three months ago and I love it, am now looking for a bigger bike. Anyway, I was riding along and then it acted as if my clutch went out. After a long walk with the bike, I got it home and took off the belt cover (?) and discovered metal shavings inside the shroud. It looked like there was at one time some sort of key that went from the shaft to the sprocket to drive the belt, but I'm not sure. Anyone out there know of what the heck I'm talking about?
