I am also new to forums...so I have been looking around this site. Thanks for being so kind.

My question is about the bike i bought from a friend. He had it in storage and so it is not running now, so i took it to a mechanic who said it was a kz1000 b4 ltd. I can find very little info. on the web about it. The guy said it would cost $400 - $600 to get it going again (cleaning out this and that). But he said it was too heavy a bike and too powerful...I believe him because I barely touch the floor when i am on it and it is heavy to move. He has a vulcan 500 for sale $1800. He said he might be able to work something out. What should i do? any advice?

what year is the kz...it could be that it may be a collectible bike...
past technology and rare find's are hard to come by.
what all did he say he neede to fix, have him lay out an estimate and do a little research into what you may need to do yourself

I am not much of a mechanic, (female 5'2") but I used to have an old car once and did some work on that. With a manual of course, I guess I can order the manual for this bike online and see whats up...I really just want to know what i need to look for when i go to buy a used bike. I don't want to go out and hurt myself, i just want to ride...the bike he has is ready to go but i don't have that much money...plus i don't need the 1000 if i can't ride it anyways...i am a little lost.

well if you think the bike may be too much for you,you should look into purchasing something a little lighter.

too much power can be a bad thing, trust me i know

Welcome aboard NBB!

If you can bring a friend who knows bikes that would be helpful to you. If you don't know anyone then you could ask an honest mechanic to check one over for you if you are really interested in it. Now...that being said...if your determined to look and buy one on your own...here are a few things you can look for.

1. Tires in good shape? Tire pressure in front and back tire accurate?

2. Chain & sprokets in good shape (unless it has a drive shaft)

3. Color and smell of the oil. Is the oil clean? Does it smell like gas? Is it milky in color or clear?

4. Do all of the lights work?

5. Does the horn work?

6. Does it have 2 mirrors?

7. Condition of the seat. Is it ripped and torn?

8. If it's an older bike how does the gas smell when you open the gas cap? Does it smell like gas or like varnish?

9. Are there any oil leaks? Where the bike is parked can you see oil spots on the ground? Is the underneath side of the bike oily/greasy? A little or alot?

10. How old is the battery? Does it start the bike up or is it dead?

11. What color is the brake fluid in the front and rear resivoir? Is it clear or a dark brown? Dark brown means it's dirty and needs changed.

12. How are the brakes? Are the brake pads thick or thin? Do the brake discs look clean and smooth or are there deep grooves and rust on them? Do the brakes work as they should?

13. How does the clutch feel? After start up and you take off does the clutch engage properly or is the clutch lever almost all the way in or out before the bike moves?

14. Does the engine smoke?

15. Does the exhaust pipes look solid/no rattles?...clean?...no rust?

16. Are the shocks solid? Are they clean with no grease/oil spots on them?

17. Do the front forks look straight?

18. Does the owner have maintenance reciepts to prove how the bike was maintained?

I hope this doesn't overwhelm you. It's not intended to do that but rather to help you to know what things you can look at if you are inclined to do so.

I'm sure others will be able to offer additional points.

Good Luck!

yeah, not far at all. i just left a 9 year employment in Sterling, working currently in Brockton, but i will be in Worcester in two weeks. nice to see more people close by on here. do you belong to Mass Vroc ? they go on rides on occassion and the email chatter is kinda cool to keep up on.

I joined last year when I picked up the meanie..I haven't gotten into the email chatter as of yet but will check it out for sure. My initial scan made it feel like most of the vroc-ers were not from around our way. It'll be good to find some locals to do some rides with for sure man.
