Default *UPDATE* Friends killed on their motorcycle

***Update***

I finally talked with Matt who was a next door neighbor to Bob abd Lavonne and got some details about the accident.

Matt talked with Bob's son today and he told him that there was highway construction on highway 12 (same highway several of us took heading to Gene and Rebecka's home in Missoula). Apparently parts of that highway had a chipseal applied and there was alot of new loose gravel on the road and no warning signs to let motorists know of the heavy gravel (possibly an oversight by the road crew?) and when Bob and Lavonne came around a corner they rode right into the heavy gravel and lost control of the bike and hit the guardrail and were killed. That would explain why he could not negociate the turn as was mentioned in the article in the newspaper.

OBITUARY FOR BOB AND LAVONNE

OBITUARIES: Robert, 71, and Irene Berg, 68

Pullman residents

Published: 07-19-2006

Memorial services for Robert and Irene Berg will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 24 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1300 SE Sunnymead Way, Pullman. Private committal will be at the Pullman Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Berg were killed in a motorcycle accident near Lewiston, Idaho, Saturday evening, July 15, 2006. Robert was born June 28, 1935 near Diamond, Wash., and grew up in the Pullman area. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He later worked for Pullman Sanitation for several years before becoming a career firefighter for the city of Pullman. A job injury forced his medical retirement. He and Irene “Lavonne” were married in 1960.

Lavonne was born Jan. 30, 1938, in Pullman. She worked for many years in the pathology department of the Washington State University Veterinary Sciences program.

They are survived by their son, Danial Berg of Spokane; two grandchildren, Cassi and Tori Berg; Bob’s sister, Auda Heaton of Moses Lake, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. They were preceded in death by a son, Blaine; Bob’s brother and two sisters and their parents.

Memorials are suggested to Pet Rescue, c/o Bea Taylor, Pullman

Services have been entrusted to Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman.

***The info posted below is the original post***

My wife called me today with some very sad news. She told me about 2 friends I have known for a couple of years here locally and have gone on group rides with who were killed Saturday while riding their Honda Silverwing.

I have ridden behind them several times going down and up the Rattlesnake Grade and Beuford Grade and other areas on rides we shared together. Bob and Lavonne were very easy going people who loved riding like no one else I have met. They would always be ready to ride at the drop of a hat. Bob was retired and Lavonne worked in the same building where my wife works so Shirley saw her daily. Bob was a good biker and knew how to handle his Silverwing. He has been riding for many...many years. It was a blow to say the least to hear this sad news about Bob and Lavonne and they will be missed. My heart aches as I type this and I will miss them.

PLEASE...EVERYONE...BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the accident report printed in the local paper:

Pullman couple killed in motorcycle crash near Lewiston

A couple from Pullman were killed near Lewiston on Saturday after their motorcycle hit a guardrail on U.S. Highway 12.

Robert W. Berg, 71, and Irene L. Berg, 68, were driving westbound on a 2003 Honda motorcycle at about 6 p.m. The motorcycle went onto the shoulder and hit a guardrail while navigating a left-hand curve, according to a news release from the Idaho State Police.
Both people were thrown from the motorcycle and died from their injuries. Neither was wearing a helmet.

I'm so sorry, Cary. I can only hope that they died the way they would have wanted to--doing something they loved and together. Still, it's really tragic. I'm curious, too, as to exactly what happened to cause the accident. It doesn't seem like someone that experienced would just fail to negotiate a curve.

The only details I know about are what have been posted in the local paper. Another good friend (Matt) who rode with us to Missoula to Gene and Beckas home lived next door to Bob and Lavonne. I have not been able to get ahold of Matt to see if he has more details about what happened. Matt and I went for a ride Sunday and he didn't mention it so I doubt he even knew they had been killed just the day before.

I just got back from a long walk. Had to have time to clear my mind. Shirley is at fire training and I didn't want to sit here alone.

I'll be sure to follow up with more as I find out.

Thanks to all for you for being here!

Wow. I am originally from Moscow, so that hits close to home... as it were. Riding is a good way to go. I didn't know them, but I am sure they will be missed.

Very sorry to hear it Cary. I remember riding with an older couple when I was at WSU in the early 90s. Age is about right, and if so, it is a sad blow indeed.

I'm sorry to hear this cary. From what you say they sound like a loving couple and if they had to go, going together would be the best for them. They are as you are in my prayers. Keep on riding.

Cary, I'm so sorry for you, Shirley and your friends' extended family. Man, this has been a dangerous year for riders. You may recall Sherm got pretty badly banged-up a few months ago from oil on the road, and there have been other postings on this forum to the same effect. When someone dies from a disease, at least there's time to prepare. Our condolences go out to all who knew Bob and Lavonne. At least they went together.
