    Default New rider, need advice

I haven't ridden in about 18 years, and I'm soon to be taking the beginner course thru ABATE. I have found a 1982 750 Spectre locally that looks very clean for $1000. The bike has about 21K miles on it. I am 5'10" and about 200 lbs. How would this bike be for me? I sat on it and it feels good. How is this model in general? I am very limited in what I can spend on a bike, so one in this price range would be great. Thanks for any help and recomendations on this bike.

    Welcome!

I would say it depends on how you intend to use the bike. If it's for commuting to and from work it may serve your needs just fine. If your planning on doing extended rides then you may need to change things around for added comfort. The main thing is to have fun and enjoy it!

I'm not sure of the model of the bike in question.
A 750 cc should be just fine....

just make sure to check it out in advance, its 24 years old and has 21K on it so make sure everything is in order....other than that sounds like an excellent bike for the price to start back on again!

Welcome aboard. I'm 6ft 4in, 250 lbs. My first bike was a Vulcan 750. I thought at first it would be too small, but it was just fine for my size. The only reason I moved up to a 1500 is because of the extended rides that Whistle mentioned in a previous post. Glad to see you're taking that course too! Be safe and enjoy!

Hi ScottZ and welcome to the forum. Great bike choice. I ride a 1983 KZ550 and a 1981 KZ1000 with the same miles as yours with no problems whatsoever. They are very reliable, quite simple to work on, economical and a lot of fun to ride. It helps to be mechanically inclined as you'll need to do much of the tune-up and servicing yourself and you'll need a service manual to help become familiar with the workings of the bike.

In addition to the fact that those bikes tend to be a little more forgiving when you twist the throttle or drop the clutch, you have previous experience and are taking a refresher course. You should have no problems with the bike you've chosen. It should also be able to pull you around quite easily.

As mentioned above, check it over well. If the bike has sat for a long time, the innards can get gummed up pretty well.

what most of the others have said. It is an '80's bike so it will be 'underpowered' (that's a relative term) but it's cheap and if you need to lay it down you'll not be out big bucks.

    Welcome.

Hello ScottZ, Welcome! If it feels good, then do it. After a while you'll be working overtime to get another one with more power. For a thousand bucks that will be enough to get ya hooked again.

I bought it today, will get it delivered tomorrow. As I understand it, it was just recently traded in by someone that rode it regularly. It fired right up with a little choke after sitting at least all night, if it was even run the day before. I feel pretty good about it's condition, although I know not to be surprised at the things that will pop up due to it's age. The bodywork on it is in great condition, along with the seat. It sure looks like it was stored indoors for most of it's life.

Scott - Welcome to the forum and back to riding. The KZ750s are very good bikes. Not particularly fast, but reliabale. It can get you into trouble fast enough though. They handle fairly well and have good brakes. A grand for that year/model is quite good.

    Enjoy your new ride!

Welxome Scottz! I didn't have anything to add to the good advice already given.

Just wanted to welcome you to our little slice of the internet.

You probably found out on your own already that this bike will outrun most modern cruisers twice it's size.
