I'm not looking for this to happen anytime soon but I've never been told what to do if this should ever happen. Did this ever happen to you and what did you do? Will the flappy tire get caught up and lock up?

I had a blowout of the rear just going into a turn on the hwy. The backend started fishing back and forth as I tried to slow down. I made it off the freeway ok..
With the front I would figure it would be the same. Front would start fishing or wandering left or right. With all my riding I have never heard of a tire falling apart during a blowout. Just get off the gas, dont use the front brakes and coast over to the side of the road, or exit the freeway if possable. Dave |

I've had the back tire go down, and it was very dicey. Loosing the front at speed would definitely be a karma deal... You'd either eat it bad, or have a heck of a survival story to tell!

once I had a flat front tire in the wee hrs of the morning wile on a trip, the nearest town/place was 14 miles away taking it very easy I rode the bike (79 FLH) the entire way without any damage to the bike or the machine. The faster I went the easier it was to ride, I managed 50mph and the bike did just fine. more often than not the tire wont "pop" but will leak air slowly as it gets lower in air you will notice that your stearing will become slugish. Anouther good reason to do the "pre-ride" check

I've lost both rear and both tires in the past, both times at speed. When I lost both tires I was two up on a friends Z1. The rear alone was on my own Z1. Both times due to nails. The secret is getting off the throttle, right now, staying off the brakes, and coasting down to a stop. Don't worry about applyingthe brakes at speed, the flat tire does a real good job of adding drag and slowing you down anyway.
If you have a passenger, it really helps if they remain calm and don't squirm around. Focus on staying upright and going straight, cause you can't turn worth squat. Fortunately, I haven't had that experience in about 30 years. And, no, I don't want to do a repeat.
