Had trouble picking a title for this thread... anyway my wife is wanting to ride with me. Now I need to find her some gear and it is of no surprise she is going by design. I think we found a helmet that she likes and fits her head reasonably well. Here's the issue, how do ladies tend to wear their hair when wearing a helmet? If we go somewhere, my wife absolutely wants her hair to look somewhat decent.
By calculations and fittings with her hair down, she needs a small or medium helmet... but with her pony tail up, its more like a large. Anyone have any tips on hair care?

Well, don't be embarassed...it really sucks if you ask me. I look like such a dork after wearing a helmet...I think the best thing to do is get a bandana that she likes, and once you get off the bike, she can put her hair either up in that or use it as like a head band sort of thing. I use my glasses to keep my hair back, but I still look weird...haha..

I know how she feels! Can't really give much advice on what to wear, but I keep ALL women's essentials in the saddlebags!!!!! I have a hairbursh (with the hard bristles to really brush the hair back down), a comb, a pony tail holder, in case it's too bad to fix up, a bandana, etc.....I thought about carrying a little spray bottle of water to mist it a bit and brush out, but Chaz already makes me fun of me for all that

dont buy the helmet large because it fits better with a pony tail. Its the skull not the hair the helmet is suppose to fit around. Never ever EVER chose style over safety when it comes to this sport.

I have long hair that I put in a ponytail when I ride. But I used to hate the way my bangs looked after wearing my helmet for a while (all smashed and/or sticking up), so I grew out my bangs. But I don't like the way I look without bangs. So I cut them again. LOL
I don't think there's any way to look gorgeous after wearing a helmet. She might try wearing a dew rag or a baseball cap after she takes her helmet off. I have a girlfriend who has short, very thin and fine hair, and she always puts a baseball cap on the minute her helmet comes off. There's no real solution to helmet hair, unfortunately. I've found that, with long hair, I add a second rubberband at the end of my ponytail to keep it from flying around and getting tangled. I've tried various ponytail wraps, but they don't fit and keep coming undone. And when I try to french braid my hair, it makes my head too fat for my helmet, so my helmet doesn't fit. (I already have a fat head to begin with.) I think the optimal solution is to shave my head, but Alan won't let me do that for some reason.

Oh, one other thing. You said "ponytail up." Do you mean that the ponytail is at the top of her head? That would be seriously uncomfortable, not to mention unsafe for the helmet fit. My ponytail is at the base of my neck. Of course, maybe her hair isn't as long as mine and that doesn't work.

I'm not a girl but this is what I have seen work well with girls I have ridden with if they have straight hair. Have her do a pony tail at the bottom of the neck and then do another pony tail holder every couple 3 inches or so to keep the hair from tangling. Then have her tuck it down the back of her jacket.
If she is going casual toss a ball cap with a whole in the back in the bag and she can put that on at the destination. If it's not a long ride she should be able to get away without it though. Braids work well too.

How about wearing the hair in a braid?
