It depends on so many factors. Age, sex, bike, insurance company, driving record, credit rating.

Try Geico, Progressive, or Nationwise. They seem to be the more bike friendly agencies. If you're an AMA member Nationwise is offering a discount. Haven't looked into it yet. But I will.

You know, comparing insurance rates is an exercise in futility because you have to compare the same bike with the same coverages with the same deductibles and even very similar credit ratings. Geographic location has an impact on rates as does age.

In a word "Outrageous". It sucks being a young male. Everyone sticks it to you from the Government on down!

Best thing to do is call some places and tell them you are buying that bike and need a quote. Even if you don't buy it.

For cost differences. I am 37 with a kid. Allstated wanted over 500 a year for my vulcan 900LT. Geico is less than 200. Same coverage.

Look at $1400-$2000 full coverage with safety course. Even more without. In other words you better have some big $$$$

For me, and I have a clean driving record...Progressive was about half as much as Allstate for bike insurance.

Your mileage may vary.....but they are worth looking into.

Thinking on it more...it's not a real apples to apples question. "How much do you pay".

Just check a few vendors, including Progressive.

At your age, you might consider bike you can pay cash for and skip full coverage. That way if you wreck it, don't tell them. Saves $
Ins companies don't like young riders on sport bikes.

I'll second the "it depends" and the "it sucks being a young male" responses. I'm looking to get my first bike soon (last MSF class is this weekend), and I'm looking at getting a 2006 or 2007 Ninja 500 (assuming I can get the financing worked out, still need to look into it...), so I ran a couple quotes yesterday. Geico wanted $1200/yr, and Progressive wanted $1400/yr for the same coverage. I need to call up my agent that has my auto and renters policies to see what it would cost through them. Since I'm looking at financing a bike, I'll have to carry comprehensive and collision.

What gets me is that so far it looks like I'll be paying as much for bike insurance on a $5000 bike as I do on my car (also a 2006, worth more than twice the cost of the bike). The biggest part of the bike insurance is the collision coverage, which doesn't make sense considering the cost of the bike.

For me, the factors that I'm sure contribute to the cost are:
Bad: 23 yr old male, single, renting an apartment, financing the bike, bike is a sportbike
Good: No tickets in the past 6 years, no insurance claims in that time either, with motorcycle endorsement on my license (well, soon), completed the MSF (again, soon), clean driving record

Unfortunately, the good doesn't seem to overcome the bad as much as I'd like. I knew I wasn't going to get the $200/yr rate the married 40+ year olds get on their cruisers (a generalization, yes), but dang!

So at this point I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna do. I can afford the rates (but every 6 months is going to be painful), but it just seems wrong to pay that much a year on a $5000 bike. /sigh. I may end up waiting until I can buy a bike outright and only carry liability (and maybe comprehensive) on it.

What insurance companies have any of the rest of you had luck with, especially those of you in CA?

Cruisers are WAY less expensive than sport bikes. Even when you're older. I can imagine what the rate would be on a 19 year old and a 636. Which, BTW is an awful choice if this is your first bike - but you didn't ask that. My guess is that you'd be easily in the 2 grand a year range on insurance.

You weren't kidding. Just for the hell of it I ran another quote through Geico, this time on a 2007 Vulcan 900 (vs the 2006 Ninja 500), and it came up $300/year cheaper (for a $2300 more expensive bike).

I also quoted a 2007 Mean Streak, just for kicks. I was (kinda...) glad to see that it was more expensive than the Ninja 500. I was going to be seriously confused if a bike with 3x larger displacement and worth over twice as much had cost less in insurance costs.

Edit: (And on the Mean Streak note - saw the Special Edition one at the dealership for the first time last week. All I can say is "daaaaaaaaaaaaamn". That is a sexy bike, and I'm not usually too into the cruisers. The matte black paint on everything is just gorgeous.)

You should be able to pay month by month. With one month down.

I may be stating the obvious, but you can get a brand new bike without getting full coverage from certain dealers. I got a bike from Luke's Kawasaki and I only pay liability.

I pay $100 or so for two bikes with full everything and comprehensive....Never saw the increase I was expecting after my excessive speeding ticket in my truck. However I did remove comprehensive on the 636 for now since it is in shambles. Soon though soon.
