You need to move to WA state! Here you don't need a birth cert, DL, or any form of ID, they dang-near take your word for it! More people here have licenses that shouldn't (on a percentage basis) than CA, and yet they stick us to the curb if you're legit! Gotta love government!
End of Co-Rant.

I'm not happy with my local BMV either. Tried to replace my 30 day tags on Monday of this week, as they expired yesterday. The BMV is open till 6:00 pm on Mondays, but only 8 - 5 Tues - Fri., and I don't get off work until 5:00. I didn't know this, but they don't accept any major credit cards, only cash, personal checks, or a debit card. I don't carry a debit card, and didn't have enough cash for the plates, and the wife has the checkbook. So I had to drive the cage into work today as the 30 day tags expired yesterday, and I'll spend a few hours on Saturday getting this done.

The DMV near me is pretty good. I can be in and out within 30 minutes most of the time. The longest I was ever in there was when I got my original M license because they require you to do the whole eye exam and written test, even if you took the MSF course.

However, it ticked me off that I had to pay for the test, then pay for the license, only to realize the one they gave me was going to expire in 3 months. They told me the fees I paid didn't cover the renewal - which would be another $50. What a scam!

those so called workers at the dmv need to get a life with your drivers licence in hand from the same state with photo in it should be a no brainer! they can pull up your info including a picture and see if it is realy you.

I think the comic Dane Cook said it best......"the DMV, otherwise know as Satans A**hole".

I'd rather have ALL my teeth pulled with pliers than spend one second of my life at the DMV. It must be a requirement to NOT have any personality what-so-ever to work there.

Man...sorry for your trouble. But on the funnier side I remembered the M.A.S.H episode where "Hawkeye" Pierce tries to find what BJ in BJ Hunnicutt stands for. Purty funny!!!

Stinks about them not accepting your forms of ID. There are two sides to the coin, one is the security aspect of not making it a cake walk to secure a state ID. On the other side of the coin, you supplied reasonable ID to support you were who you said you were.

I would strongly question their decision and maybe take it over their head if you felt so inclined. I recently had an occassion to go over some other local state employees in regards another state run department. The answer I got is that the people in question either would be retrained, demoted or fired.

I believe here in VA all you need is a valid driver's license for that sort of transaction... otherwise you open Pandora's box and you need to supply several recognized forms of ID including some current unitity bills to corroborate your address.

That is why my dad gave me that name because of that episode.

Any way I went to the DMV that is closer to my house (about 20 min) I had my BC but didn't even have to show them it. All I did was give them my paper work and license and my 5 bucks. Was in and out in 20 mins with my M. And the people there were very nice!!! That is the one I am going to go to form now on.

Congrats BJ

Your name reminds of a story comedian Henry Cho once told...

He had a buddy that was filling out the application for a driver's license (somewhere in the South). The buddy's name J B Stewart (given name).
On the application (so as not to confuse anyone) put J then only B then only (like this J only B only Stewart). He said his buddy's license came back with the name Jonly Bonly Stewart...

I guess its called beurocrocy, or something like that. I am a resident here- from Scotland, and with a full bike licence. Yep- I can ride a bike. But wait, I live here now. So I need a USA licence.
yep, your ( U.K.) licence is good. you can buy rent and ride until the sun goes down.....but.... No, we wont give you one. So, I have to ride on my (U.K.) licence, and have issued a learners permit. ...
funny thing is, if I fail the test, I still have a licence. go figure.

My understanding is that most countries will honer a valid drivers liscence from from other countries, in the case of a "resident alien" as a curtosy. The issuing of a permit, is just a formality so that if you get pulled over, the officer has something he can run through the system for records.

My question is this: If you come from a country with a tiered liscencing system, and are only liscenced to ride a 500cc bike, can we tell you you cant ride a 750 here in the Stateas?!?

Or on the flip-side, can an 18 year-old kid with a US liscence, with only two weeks of experiance on a 250 Ninja, go to a country with a tiered system, and ride anything he wants??

Just some food for thought.

I don't understand! As long as you are here legally you can get a driver's license. I am an on a student visa and I have my Car license and M class endorsement. What state do you live in? May be something different there.

Were they trying to save money at the expense of the folks that paid the taxes? Really frustrating for you. Is there any general move to force a review of the situation? You cannot be the only person pi$$ed off by this.

I think he's meaning he can't get one without taking a test first, despite having a valid license from the UK. Maybe they just want to make sure he knows what side of the road to drive on...

When I first came to Connecticut, I had to take a written test to get a Connecticut license, despite having a valid NY state license. I don't think you have to do that anymore, though.

Heck with that....with the rediculous fees they change for every little thing, you'd think they could afford to keep the other locations open.

When I switched out my old license for a California license I had to show an additional form of ID, I showed them my military ID, they also take birth certificates and passports, but not SSN cards ($100 on the street for one and all that).
