Performance Mods on 1983 KZ550 LTD?

I bought a 1983 KZ550 LTD a couple years ago for $600. It is my first bike. Then this year I got a 81' parts bike for $200. The bike is in near mint condition and its pretty quick, but I want more power out of it. How much work and money am I looking at putting out to find the parts to make some mods. Also, any suggestions for mods...?

You can put on K&N filters on there, re-jet carbs and find an aftermarket 4-1 header system should make it haul some serious butt. I had a -81 one 6 years ago. I still have a Kawasaki Shop Manual for it if your interested.

Yeah, I have heard that rejetting the carbs can really improve the performance, do you have any idea about the price for that? Also, I have a 4 into 1 Kerker exhaust now, but thanks. I have a manual for it, very helpful...and how much difference would changing the sprockets make for racing 0-100 mph? There is a kid at school who has a late 80's Honda Nighthawk 750. He claims its pretty fast and wants to race, so im looking for some quick beef for my bike.

Then tow it with a KZ1000 because that's what it's going to take.
