Default My Bike Got Stolen!!!

I am so upset right now. I came home late from my mom and dads to find that my 2003 Ninja 250 has been stolen. I got this bike in February and it was in excellent condition. Only 4900 miles! I called the police department and they said they only had one officer on duty. I had to give them all of the appropriate information, and they are going to write a report. They are not even going to talk to my neighbors or come out to my house. They said they only have one officer on duty..... on a Friday night????? This is my first bike and I bought it as a college graduation gift to myself. I guess I do not understand a couple of things. If someone wants to shed some light on the situation, please feel free.

1. How could someone be so mean? I just do not understand how someone could stoop so low
2. How can the police department not even come to the house to check things out? They said there would be no problem with the insurance company as there would be an official report.
3. The plates run out in less than a month. Will the person be able to get license plates for the bike or will this help find it?
4. My finance has a 2003 R1 that is kept in the same spot. He rode his bike to work, so it was not taken. There is no way to lock the carport so how do we keep his bike from getting stolen also? If they have already taken one, what is to stop them from taking the other one?

I have no idea what happens now. I have never had anything stolen. It had to have been someone checking out my house. This bike was kept on a carport that is difficult to see from the road. I have been at my parent's a lot lately helping them get ready for a graduation party. The handlebars were locked, which means someone had to pick the bike up and take it. This whole situation makes me so mad!!!! Any suggestions????

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that...

1) Because people nowadays are so damn inconsiderate of others. Every one's out for themselves anymore, and I learned years ago not to give the rest of the human race any credit until they earn it. People are just plain ol' mean and thieves are the scum of the earth.

2) It's not really that uncommon... especially if they only have 1 officer on. The reality of the matter is that it's not worth tying up the single cop on a stolen property report incase something more serious happens. Also, as crappy as it sounds, the chances of them finding out who stole your bike by processing the crime scene is slim to none.

3) If someone stole your bike I'm sure they could care less about registering it. But no, if they tried to and it was listed stolen in the DMV database, they'd be arrested.

4) The reality of the matter is that these bikes are so light that they're easy pickings. They don't ride them away when they steal them now. Instead, they come 2 up with a panel van and some 2x4s, pull up next to your bike, straddle it with the lumber and hoist it into the back. You can chain it, put an alarm on it, etc, etc, etc but you can never outright be sure it won't be taken. Also, it's not hard at all to break the handlebar interlock... a good kick to the handlebars is probably enough to smash it.

As for whats next, follow up with the police department in the morning and make sure they're writing the report - ask when you can get a copy of it. Then call your insurance company and file a claim; they'll take it from there.

I'm so sorry they got to you, it just frosts me that people could do this to others .

Sorry to hear about what happened. I know that you are feeling so many things right now. I wish I could tell you something that will make you feel better. Unfortunately, the way these things get resolved is that insurance will pay you for the replacement cost of your bike minus your deductible (if you had comprehensive) and most likely the jerks that stole your bike will never be held accountable. I hope the next bike you get will be somehow better for you than your last and try not to get too bogged down thinking about the losers that did this to you other than to take the appropriate precautions/measures. Hang in there.

To endure theft is just a plain cruel thing, period. But for it to be your bike!!!

The only thing I can offer, and I think it's universal here in this forum, is that we're all here for you, girl. Hopefully, your local PD will find out who the **** took your ride, and Karma's payback is definitely a b****!

Best wishes. Hope you feel better soon.

Three suggesstions:

You say your carport is located where it's "difficult to see from the road". This is a BAD thing. Install flood lighting. Mine is hooked up to a photocell, and comes on at a reduced power at dusk, leaving a slight glow in front of my house. Trip the motion sensor, and your world gets lit up!!! Their not expensive! See Lowes or home Depot.

Get a good lock. Something plainly visible. Use a chain type. That prevents the theft from happening with the two boards as mentioned above. It can be beaten, but most scumbags won't take the time, especially when their world is lit up!

Use an audible alarm. Who's going to try cutting off your lock while being blasted with 120 decible alarm and flood lights?

I know what you're going thru bro. I've had an R6 stolen and my KX250 was stolen twice! When I called the cops to report the R6 they told me I could do the police report over the phone and they didn't even send an officer.
Man, I would be scared to ride a hot bike....karma.

I think thieves are the worst. Can't get their own so steal some one elses. No respect for the property of others. I do believe in the Karma thing though and they WILL get theirs!
So sorry for your hassle in the meantime.

Good grief!!!!

I hope you get your bike back and they catch the SOB's.

Sorry to hear this.

Have there been any other thefts in the neighborhood recently? Maybe chack around with neighbors to see if anyone saw anything.

I strongly agree with all the above comments, personally I have all plus piranha alarm and engine immobiliser, and a bloody big security lock and tempered chain to chain the bike to the carport uprights! You can never have too many redundant systems!
