Hey everyone, name's Joe- Im 24, and currently live in Ft. Worth, TX.
First thing, I love the site y'all have here.. lots of knowledge floating around. I just picked up a 2001 ZX-6R... it is my first bike, not my first to ride tho. Before anything else, I want to take care of a little preventative maintenance stuff. Where does everyone buy there oil/oil filter? Best brand of oil? Synthetic (yes/no)? The bike has high mile (20K) so i thought i'd go with synthetic oil Chain lube? (what kind is best, and where can I find some?) What are some other maintenance issues I can knock out before I start puttin miles on her? If anyone has any suggestion i would like to hear them. here's a few pics... (excuse the fine camera phone quality) |

Welcome. Try this regional site out too. Lots of good people on there. My previous bike was an '03 blue 636. I think solid blue bikes look pretty good.
Fort Worth Motorcycle Riders Chain Wax is a good chain lube. My owner's manual says to use kerosene to clean the chain. You may want to do that before lubing it. As a matter of fact, you may want to check your chain slack too. You may also want to take it to the dealer to get it serviced. I just get the Kawi brand oil and filter. Not sure what a good synthetic oil is...I've never used it. How are the tires and brakes?

Welcome, nice bike........as a matter of fact 20k is not high mile. If it has had regular maintenance....it should roll many times the amount it currently has.

I haven't taken any of the plastics off yet, does anyone know if doing an oil change is difficult on this bike? Recommend taking it in to a kawi shop instead? (ive never paid for an oil change in my life, but im not too proud to if necessary).

Welcome Joe !! When I got my bike ( newbie as I am ) I just let a local shop do the first service so I could go ride right away without worries. Got plenty of time to find out what to do and how later.
Ride safe !Tim |

Wlelcome! Good luck with the bike and be careful.
Skip the synthetic oil as well as any conventional oils with friction reducing additives - you'll have clutch problems if you use them. Just get a good conventional SG or SH oil, or spend more for motorcycle specific oil at you local dealer or accessory shop. |
