I dropped a bike I hadn't even bought yet.

I went to my co-worker's house to check out the XV920 she had in her garage. Tilted it off the sidestand, but didn't kick the sidestand up. Rolled it out into the middle of the garage, and attmepted to let it settle back on the sidestand. What I didn't know is that my foot (or perhaps the garage floor) had gently nudged the sidestand back, just past the point where it could support any weight. I didn't realize there was a problem until too much weight had transferred in my direction. I wasn't prepared to catch it, and down we went. Crushed the left front blinker. I haven't dropped a bike since 1992. Ugh.

I find the best way to drop a bike is to drive off, without removing the disc brake lock. Since it ALWAYS happens in parking lots, you end up looking like a moron.

Yeah, I've done it once...or twice.

I saved myself that embarassment by placing them right up against the calipers so the bike won't even move. Chance of falling is much less that way.

I'm still chuckling about #10. It would be best if the rider kept their feet on the pegs as the bike fell slowly.

Attach a lanyard to the lock, and loop it around your handle bars, no more forgetting it ever again.

here's a new one.
Stopped at an intersection.
In line to turn Right,
coming to the turn at 5mph in first gear with feet down,
leaning into the turn,
then all forward traffic stops.
feet down on the ground, trying to straighten it up before i fall low-side,
grab the hand brake (and the throttle)
and before I know it, the bike is looking backwards!
then it falls over.

in the MSF course, the emergency stop test (hand brake) sent me sailing over the headlight into a loping jog. that's what the one-cyl buells are for.

I got the Motorcycle Acrobatics award.

wow these are hilarious... nice to see the humorous side of all the stuff i'm scared i'm going to do...

the shoelaces in the gear shift one i'll second. even though i didn't actually fall i am going to be really careful about making sure i tuck those bad boys away!

i'll also make the quoted user feel better because i dropped a bike i was test riding. awe.some. it was such low speed, pulling off the road into a gravel drive (gravel was like snow to a camel... i had never seeeeen anything like this before! hahaha)... used the front brake, it was so slowww going over.. i held part of the weight so it didn't hit the ground..

but in the end i'm just left here standing over a bike on its side, unable to pick it up but still trying to hold some of its weight up, fumbling for the kill switch, and i'm sure with the owner trying not to throttle me as he thought something along the lines of 'effing women drivers'... holy crap that was awkward. luckily no damage was done...

i actually did end up buying that bike so we already have history..

ps i think it's funny that there's badword autoedit in this forum! guess i forgot it's a totally public forum..

Mine was a combination of two. One, riding for a long time, being too tired and kind of unfamliar with how standing on firm ground feels. Two, I dismounted without setting the kickstand down. I actually got off ok, with both feet firmly on the ground, but my knees were kind of weak and I felt off-balance. So, by the time I realized that it was going over and I had my legs under me, it was too far over for me to stop it. I did manage to slow it down and I had just installed crash bars. So, no harm, no foul. And that's all I have to say about that.

3. Locking the front wheel during overenthusiastic braking.

While completing the MSF safety course (during hurricane Katrina this past year...yes, we rode in the pouring rain) going over straight line braking drills, I learned the difference between "grabbing" the front brake when I should have "squeezed" the front break. Nothing beats sliding across the soaked pavement only to come to a rest at the instructors feet to see him shaking his head and say "You grabbed the front brake...bet you won't do that again" Lesson learned!

I got 3 to add. think you're going to turn around in someone's uphill driveway, rolling backwards into the street, go just a little too fast out of a curvy drive that is covered in dry pine straw, kids thinking they can play on it ( I think one of them stepped on the R side floorboard to get on ... broke my mirror off that time)

I was 14 and training myself to ride a motorcycle (this was Alaska, where a 14 year old can get his motorcycle license and legally ride a 50cc and under motorcycle or scooter on the road) and I got into some wet grass between the tire ruts of my driveway. Downed the bike and still have a scar on my knee. It hurt like hell, but only kept me off the bike for about 10 minutes. The other time I downed my bike I was drunk.

On my second ride ever I was in 4th heading up a steep steep road and decided to try and make a uturn at 5 mph. Came so close to laying it down on the left side and having it slide down the hill. Stalled and barely righted it. All the while with the clutch pulled in. That would have been VERY embarrassing.

Not putting a board under the kickstand on asphalt on a hot day.

I bought a used plastic cutting board at a yard sale for ten cents. Cut the handle end off, cut the rest of it into two pieces. Kept one to put under the kickstand if necessary and gave the other one to a buddy.

I keep it in the pocket of the hard bag.
