Default Tonight.... Kuryakyn ISO Grips (Any Incite?)

Tonight after we put the little guy to sleep, I'm going to sneak out to the 'Toy Box' and install the Kuryakyn ISO Grips & Throttle Boss I purchased this winter.

Do others have any tips, tricks or things to watch for?

I've spoken to others that have these grips and the big concern is the glue.... Dually noted/warned in the instructions as well: http://www.kuryakyn.com/documents/in...-23MC-0706.pdf

Will I be able to 'dry test fit' the grips, remove(?) and apply the glue and install them for eternity (Or so the glue warnings make it sound!! )?

Thanks for the help....

Just did mine last Friday. It was pretty easy and straight forward. I'd call it a 1-beer job (would be 1/2-beer, but once you open it...).

Definately test-fit the left grip before you glue. The glue sets very quickly. The only issue I had during installation was the throttle grip. There was a burr on the inside that did not allow the throttle to snap back on it's own. A quick hit with the Dremel did the trick though.

Once it's 'lubed' with glue does it slide on nice and easy @ final application/installation?

I replaced my old grips with Kury ISO's a couple weeks and ago and now I wonder why on earth I wait so long. I LOVE them!!!!!

Personally, I use high temp ATV to adhere my grips. I have used this on three different sets (on two different bikes) and not had a problem. It does take a little longer to set up, but the hold is perfect..

Didn't seem to 'lube' much at all, but I didn't use much of the glue. Was very hard to squeeze out of the little plastic bottle.

Do the right grip first. That way, you'll know how that grip sits when it's not in use. If you're type "a" like me, you'll want both sides to match. Then, test fir the left one. I wouldn't even bother with the glue. I just used some hairspray and have never had issues with it and it goes on with less mess. Did it for the Grips on both our bikes.

The glue sets up fast, but not that fast. You'll have plenty of time to set it in place. Just remember that once you stop moving it is when it will start to set. You'll be able to push it on, look back at it, adjust, look back at it, adjust and then shortly after that you'll notice that it just isn't moving anymore (just don't look back it for more then a second or two). When I did mine, I dry fitted first and then placed a little piece of scotch tape on the grip right where I wanted it to line up with the controls. Worked perfect.

Talking It's easy!

I put mine on last night in about 20 minutes. Phillips screwdriver, utility knife, tape measure needed. And dang, are they nice!

If you have anything like RadioShack Electronics Cleaner, use it to take the old glue off the left grip bar. Alcohol, WD-40, etc. didn't touch it, and I hate scraping... The Electronics Cleaner did the trick in about 20 swipes of a rag. Followup with a cleaning with alcohol before putting the grip on.

Do the right side first - when you take the slack out of the throttle cable adjusters, make a mental note of how much tension is on them when you twist them loose. The only question I have on putting everything back together was the adjustment on the cables. I pretty much have it right, don't hear anything different and the throttle works properly, but wish I'd done that instead of just backing it off. You can note how many threads are showing as a guide, but mine did change a couple from the looks of it.

Watch using any pliers when removing the cables, and keep the twist in the cable the way it should be when putting the cable heads back in the grip. Twisting it the wrong way will enlarge (untwisting) the cable and will make it bind.

The left side: strip off the old grip, clean the bar good and then test fit the grip before roughing up the bar a bit with emery cloth. When I measured the grip depth and the bar depth, the grip was 1/16th of an inch deeper than on the bar, so no spacer was used/needed.

Test fit was no problem, just pull it off and clean the bar again.

I had to pull off the top of the bottle and run the glue out by gravity. Might want to run hot water over the bottle to soften it up a bit first... Coated the first 2/3 of the inside by dribbling it down inside the grip.

Only problem I had was when I shoved the grip on, the one side of it rolled back inside the grip, shoving it out the first hole of the grip . Not good! Had to grab a screwdriver real quick and pry it out, reset it, and make sure when putting it over the end of the bar that it was fully "in the hole", so to speak. (no, guys - don't touch that.... ) Once on, just twist/wiggle back to the turn signal housing until it's fully seated, with the final movement being where you want the bulges to be on the grip when in place.

After that, leave it until the morning, and enjoy having hands that don't go numb!

Aqua Net hair spray is your best friend when it comes to installing grips.

They are a piece of cake to install ... if a mechanical impaired person like me can do it anyone can. I installed the throttle side first and the put the supplied glue inside the left one and slide it on to match. Took 2 beers and about 1/2 hour ( I drink fast).

Thanks for the help/hints guys.... I had them all swapped out in about 30-35minutes ( I work slow on projects like these to assure accuracy and enjoy the time alone with the cycle ). As stated they go on easy.... the only thing I found that I'd add: "When test fitting/installing the left grip, remove the end cap to allow air to escape. Allowing the grip to slide on easier! Also, use a pliers to grip the glue bottle and aid in squezing out the glue into the grip!"

I also changed the spark plugs (NGK's), and man what a differance... fired up faster, ran smoother (had to turn down the idle screw), seemed all round quieter- breather vent, engine and exhaust (was this my imagination??). NOw I may need to remove any packing on the baffles I like loud.... so I don't want to hear it from you!!

Tonight.... oil-change, check fluids, air pressures, and on Friday.... New Metzeler 880's and maybe brake pads(need to check these yet). That should just about have everything up to par for the start of the riding season.

My 2nd set was on the 2K. When I went to install them, I found that the included super glue was all dried up! I build my own golf clubs, so I used the double sided tape used for grips, added a little sovent, worked great!
