A Camp Lejeune Marine died this past Saturday after he lost control of his motorcycle in a parking lot.

Highway Patrol says it happened at Semper Fi Storage.

Troopers say Marine Shane Dante Groomes was speeding through the parking lot, over turned, lost control and smashed into a parked vehicle.

They believe he was going up to 50 miles per hour.

As of right now, Highway Patrol does not believe alcohol was a factor but they are waiting on the medical examiners report.

Stupid should always hurt. Just unfortunate when it has to kill. 50MPH in a parking lot? Wow.

Sorry to hear this. We don't know what was going on in his head. Did he just get back from Iraq/Afghanistan? PTSD or as stated, just stupid?

Maybe he was a newbie and nailed the throttle?
Whatever the case, my condolences and RIP.

Maybe there should be a sticky to post all the riders that get killed...or would there be enough room. Sad but it happens...Sadder when it's someone close.

Number one killer of young Marines are motorcycles, next to IEDS.

Happens all the time: young Marine returns from deployment, has lots of cash saved up, buys biggest bike he can get, never mind gear or training! Many die within a few miles, sometimes blocks, from the cycle dealer. Sadly, I personally, know many who have.

Many keep the bikes in off-base storage because they don't have the required license, training, insurance, etc. to get it on-base. Not saying that was the case here but it happens...A lot.

May this Leatherneck rest in peace.

Semper Fi,

Semper Fi,

Army has the same problem. They are coming back with 20-30k and they go out and buy liter and bigger bikes, combine this with the aggresive driving you do overseas and being rusty or inexperienced and you have a recipe for disaster.

We had one here last week. Felt sorry for the guy, till' I heard the whole story. Guess I still feel sorry. Small college town, didn't make the news. Guy T-bones a Ford truck.
Sport bike looks like a ball of metal, truck is caved in, guy is done. He does this in a business district (strip store's, bar's, MacD's, ect) 25 mph speed limit. Hmmmmm.
Turns out, he's at a local bar, eatery, goes into the parking lot, proceeds to entertain with burn outs and wheelies. Not enough, he runs down the street, to prove how far he could ride a wheelie, Ford pulls out of Micky D's, end of story.

yep, seen those kind of guys around here too.

The other day I waved a two riders as I was passing under the highway overpass, instead of waving back they pull wheelies and ride them through the busy intersection!

We just had a video on the news a couple of weeks ago, where a group of riders took up all 5 lanes of I-5 doing wheelies heading north to Seattle.

ACTUALLY.

Youre all entitled to your own opinions just please be effin respectful..
Shane was by far one of the best people Ive ever met in my life.. More of a man at 19 yrs old than most/some of you, will be in their/your 20s-30s, some, ever in their life.
Whether you think his actions were stupid or not, is irrelevant.
And since we're already stating opinions, I think you all are stupid.. Bikers period are stupid by thinking yall own the road... I have no pity for any one, any one at all who is weaving in and out of traffic and driving up in between cars like complete fools or riding without protecting themselves by wearing better gear.
And lastly, NO, he was fresh to the Marines. So it wasnt PPS. He hasn't been to Iraq.

As for the accident, the bike malfunctioned and it was already wet and he lost what control he could've possibly had, and slammed into a car...
For people to call that stupidity, I think is ignorant... Bc how do you explain people who been riding for years, IE, some of you, doin half the stupid sht you do? OR die still at the wheel, or well NOT behind your handle bars...

THAT being said, while his family, friends and my self, grieve a tragic loss, its greatly appreciated that you keep your opinions to yourself. Granted, yes, this is a bike forum and the internet but again, would you want someone talking nonsense about someone you loved? I dont think so...

Respectfully,
A friend.

P.S thank you for condolences.

Well let me tell you something... These last few days have been hell for us... Yesterday was his funeral and that destroyed yet brought us all together..

He left behind a loving girlfriend of two years, a little sister and a little brother who is the spitting image of him. As well as friends [myself have known him since we were 12] and a wonderful family....

So please...just have a heart...

Thanx... May God protect you in your rides...just remember sometimes, like Shane, youre just not meant to survive...

Good idea about a sticky thread dedicated to fallen riders.
+1

It would serve as a stark reminder to all who visit here.
