I'm going to make my final California run next month. I'm 60 years old and this is it! I'll be going to San Diego via L.A. Havn't been in a long time. I'm wondering how strict the cops are in New Mexico, Arizona, and California about open pipes. I'm from Missouri and have ridden in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas with no problems. I hate to put the baffles in because I will have to retune the fuel injection and ruin the performance. Any thoughts or experiences?

CHP is generally cool unless you are a patch holder... then all bets are off.
Local cities run the gamut from "don't care if you aren't showing off" to "anything other than stock is a ticket" Long Beach, Temecula, Anaheim, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita... they have all been pretty harsh in the past couple of years.

Hey Doc,
Just make the run. The "Chippies" are mostly pretty reasonable as long as you don't "cop" an attitude. Don't believe that they don't "profile", 'cause they do. If you look like an a$$, make noise like an a$$, they will pretty much treat you like an a$$. Mellow out, cruise through the "quiet zone" and you likely won't have a problem. You might get a "fixit" ticket. "cop" an attitude and you could get a bit less royal treatment. Most of the CHP's are pretty good guys, they really like to feel they are in control if they stop you at all. Courtesy is good currency with these guys. BTW, why hang it up at 60? You are getting into the good part! |

Open pipes in Ca. You might be taking chances. Being that you're from out of state, I don't think that will matter to any law officer that wants to stop you. Some let mods go by, some don't. Kinda depends on their agenda.

Sounds like Rich has the pulse of the PD in LA. Any members from SD? Like JBSMD said, it kind of depends on the local agencies.

I'm not a patchholder and ride like the best "law abiding citizen" when I'm out of state. I try to keep the sound down in towns. Guess I'll try it and hope for the best. This is my last trip to Ca., not quiting riding. I'll quit riding when I'm 6 feet under! Thanks to everyone for their help. I appreciate it.

With the pipes that the Harley riders get away with here, I think you'll be fine as long as you don't flip any LEO's off.

Yup.
And they DO know the difference between the MC's and riding clubs. My club has only been stopped once... in Anaheim... for pipes. They let us go with a warning. We've been paced by CHP for a few miles but never bothered... they probably ran our plates while on the move. But any group of 10-30 bikes in tight formation is going to attract a certain amount of attention.
