Hawkshot's poll made me think about this.....
With regard to the type of bike you ride now...I'd be interested to see if there are any correlations or patterns between type of bike and age, type of bike and gender and type of bike and geographic locations.... Also, did anyone start out on a different type of bike than they ride now? For instance, I know a lot of people I know who ride sportbikes NOW, started out riding dirtbikes and ATV's as a kid. And also, I know sometimes we joke that "when we're older" we'll get a big cruiser (like a Goldwing) for cross-country trips, etc... "once we get the need-for-speed out of our system." Anyone else follow this line of thinking? And what made you choose the type of bike you have now? What kind of riding do you predominantly do (daily commuting, mountains/twisties, long-distance cruising, city riding, etc....)? P.S. I'm not at ALL criticizing cruisers, or implying that those who ride them are "old" as I know plenty of people my age and younger who ride cruisers (and I've ridden with friends who have them - it's certainly more relaxing and comfortable than a sportbike!)... I'm just asking based on comments I've heard or made myself.

As for me...
I'm 33, female, and ride a sportbike (well, I OWN a sportbike - she's not being ridden, yet), and live in (flat, twistie-less) Florida. This is my first bike, and I suppose I chose a sportbike because sportbikes are what got me interested in bikes to begin with!! I've made many, many friends within the local sportbike scene, and I find the entire sport very exciting!

Started out on mini bikes, then dirt bikes and enduros. My first street bike was a sport bike and I used it for daily commuting. Like many of us older folks, we gave up the bike for family issues. I started renting HD's with friends and my wife liked the way it rode. I worked on convincing her about another bike and finally got the Nomad. It is more comfortable than a sportbike and my wife likes it. She never cared for riding on the back of the sportbike. I would love to have a sport bike too, but the garage and budget say no.

So your wife would not like it if I pointed out that I picked up my bike for $300, and we fit TWO SUV's (an Explorer and a Cherokee) and TWO bikes (a CBR900RR and my ZX6R) in a standard two-car garage.... (hey, just tryin' to help ya out!)

I too started out on a dirtbike, an old Kawy KDX80. After a past littered with sportbikes I geuss at the "mature" age of 35 I have finally come full circle back to Team Green
As far as "the need for speed" goes, it still exists inside me. I just define and satisfy it differently than I once did.

I started riding when I was 22 on an old Yamaha Maxim XJ650. Kindof a cruiser, but more of a standard. I've had sportbikes since that one. I decided that I just liked the look and the performance of sportbikes. I'd love to add a cruiser to the stable, but other things are taking $$ priority these days.

I'm on the bike I started on, a cruiser.... And no offense is meant by this against you sporty's K? I have the need for speed, and my 700 has all the power I want so far. Not only that, IMHO cruisers are just excitably sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahem... In all honesty, I can tell someone that I like the color scheme on their sport bike, that it looks good, but in my mind I think "as good as a sportbike could look." I still love sportbike riders the same as cruiser riders, but the look of a sportbike does absolutely nothing for me. Now a chromed up cruiser........ Thats a waaaaaaaayy different story! As for a dresser... same thing. Until I'm to that stage in life, the looks just turn me off. And that's my opinion, not a judgement of anyone who rides them..... Oh, and BTW, I rode dirtbikes as a kid... Last edited by Chromequeen : 05-18-2005 at 11:21 AM. |

I started riding dirt bikes in my teens. In my late 20s, I had a combination dirt/street bike (Honda CB360).
Last year, I decided to get into riding again, and I knew I wanted a cruiser. My hubby, however, who was buying his first-ever bike, bought a sport/touring bike. I'm 50, and he's 53.

I'm a 32 year old male, live in Miami, Florida. I enjoy riding in to Keys, Islamorada...no twisties down here as neebelung mentioned before but, the ride down the Keys through Old Card Sound Road is a nice laid back cruise with views of the ocean at times. Started riding a Kaw Byou 300 ATV in the mountains in up state New York at 13. My father owned a 79 KZ650SR. A freind that I havent seen in years also owned a vintage Kaw, 77 KZ1000A, I loved both bikes and is the reason I own one today. I prefer an inline 4 and these older Kaws in my opinion are beautiful machines with lots of power from a stock engine. You dont see many KZ's down here so its great to ride something different. I'm looking for a KZ 650 or 900,1000 for a project bike, also Theres a new ZRX1200 in my future as long as I can fit it in the garage.

Lessee...... I had a tricycle when I was 2. Not sure what make cos I couldn't read then.
Seriously tho, my bike list is in my sig. I drive a TT Quattro or Jeep most times. bike is sheer indulgence. As for my current ride and the way it's modded, I think it's cos I'm still part Scorpio. Hard to tell when you're so old even the constellations have moved.

I started out on old 2stroke dirtbikes about 4 years ago, and then just saved and conned until my parents said yes to me getting a sportbike. I was thinking about a cruiser, but those forward controls just mess me up. I just can't seem to ride with them.
