Question Ignition Advancer 1997 zx7r

When I purchased the bike I was told the ignition was advanced 7 degrees for more high end power. I have heard you can retard the advancer as well to gain low end torque for pulling wheelies.

First question is: My bike seems to sputter at mid range and then takes off at higher rpm's. Is this because of the ignition being advanced? FYI- equiped with stage 1 jet kit and full Micron exaust.

Also: How do you adjust the thing? (I know how to get to it)

One more: Will retarding the ignition make a huge difference in the wheelie department?

Wait, one more: If anyone has some recomended settings or has tried a few different settings, what was the verdict?

Thanks much...STV

When you advance (or retard) the ignition you are advancing it over stock timing. There are a few companies that make an ignition advancer for the 7R including Factory Pro and APE. Factory Pro offers a +2, +4, +6, or an adjustable advancer, and APE offers a +4 or an adjustable advancer.

As far as adjusting the stock timing without buying an adjustable advancer, It can't easily be done.

Hope it's not too late, but there is a Factory Pro Advancer on ebay right now. From what I can see of the PN it looks like a 4 degree advance.

Thanks for the help. I guess I need to figure out what's in my bike right now first before I do anything else. I purchased it used and was told it had an adjustable ignition advancer. However, I don't think the guy was the most honest person in the world so who knows...

It would be easy to check and see if you have an advancer. Just take off the cover on the right hand side of the engine (small cover where the crank is) and have a look see.

I just put one on my older 600r tonight. Very easy to install, remove two bolts on the cover, then just a 12mm on the nut and 17mm to hold it in place, only goes in one way, and its the 4 degrees one by Factory Pro. Noticed a smoother pull with half throttle and maybe a hair quicker in the top end not that big of improvement but for the 5min or less install and price I paid $30 with shipping its worth it.
