1996 vulcan custom speedo just quit working

Well today my bud rode his bike over to my house so i could take a look at his speedo - it quit working after a bearing on the sprocket side went south. I pulled the cable all the way out and it is not broke on either end . I the took the speedo off and checked the speedo - i placed a small screwdriver in the back side of the speedo and turned it counter clockwise the speedo needle will move . I put the bike on the jack stand and started the bike and put it in gear and watched the speedo cable it was not turning so i then unhooked the cable from the rear wheel and and put the bike in neutral and spun the rear tire and watched the little slotted piece of metal in the hub - it will turn if i spin the tire backwards but if i spin the tire forward the little slotted piece will not turn - any ideas as to get the speedo going again ? Really don't need any tickets cause bud just got laid off .
