IT sounds like you need to measure the float height on your carbs most likely. are you running a fuel filter between the carbs and tank?

if not, its possible dirt got pulled into the carbs and is keeping a float needle from thoroughly sealing as it should.

Yes, new filter installed today when I cleaned the carbs. How do I get it not to smell like gas?

you're going to have to double check your float height I think.

How do I adjust the float height? Can't wait to get my repair manual in.

you're going to want to wait for your repair manual if you're not familiar with checking float height.

Deja Vu all over again. It was a pain to get cranked this morning. Fired it up and w/ the choke and it shot up to 5k rpm's. I feather down the choke enough to keep it running. Had to adjust the idle screw and got it around 1100 rpm's but it fluctuated between 900-1300 rpm's. Took it for a short spin and started idling higher. Adjusted the idle screw again. Drove a little more then the rpm's slowly dropped then died. Tried to restart it but it would never fire up. I let it set for a few minutes and still nothing. I might have to let someone take a look at it who knows more about it. Hate to see how much they would charge.

it sounds like your fuel filter is letting too much crap in, or you have more than just a carb issue.

For kicks I took the line loose at the fuel filter and gas comes out. I have a full tank. I took the petcock loose from the tank took it apart and cleaned it. Put it back on and still no gas flows through. The petcock I have is a push button type. Push to prime. Why would no gas flow through? Is the gas pulled through by vacuum?

I think you've got a vacuum diaphragm petcock, so that when the motor is running and vacuum is being made, it lets fuel flow. might not hurt to rebuild that anyhow. they wear out over time and start to not work so well.

I finally got it to crank only with the choke out and when it does it revs really high and dies after a few seconds and won't start back for a few minutes. It is getting gas from the fuel line. One line from the petcock goes to the fuel filter and the other line runs to a tee then splits to carb 1 & carb 4. I took petcock line that runs to the tee loose and checked for vacuum while I was cranking and there was no suction from the tee. I'm gonna have a mechanic buddy of mine come take a look.

you'll only feel vacuum from that line if he motor is running, otherwise it doesnt have any suction.

but your bike needs a mechanic I think.

I found a guy near me. He charges $35 hr. When I bought the bike the guy told me the cam chain would need to be changed in the near future. Would that give it these symptoms?

cam chain no you got fuel problems. get ride of the vacuum petcock and put a regular one on like off a 89 to 90 zx7. sounds like its running out of fuel.

How is the 89, 90 zx7 one made? Single fuel line w/ on/off switch? I noticed if the bike is leaned over on the kick stand, it will idle a little faster but when you stand it up straight it idles back down.

If I swap it out w/ the standard style petcock, what do I do w/ the vacuum line that runs to carbs 1 & 4? Cap them off?

While I was riding around the block a few minutes ago, it would start idling higher then lower. Similar to a cars IAC when it goes bad.

on carbed bikes, this suggests a fuel shortage, or lean condition of some manner. likely due to the vacuum petcock. either way, you need to replace that or rebuild it and clean it thoroughly.

not jus the diaphagm, but rebuild the whole petcock. there are kits to do this, I advise you to order one and make it so. its quite easy and I've done a few myself.
