Default Oil change question

Ok, I'm sure this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it. I want to do my own oil changes, and I know what type of oil I need, but I would like some recommendation for specific brands. I would like to go to synthetic oil.

How about it, what should I use?

As a confirmed user of Pennzoil for many years in dirt bikes & quads, I decided to try the Pennzoil synthetic last time. I have about 1700 miles on this oil and when I change it again in a couple hundred more I think I'll go back to the Pennzoil petroleum again...couldn't justify the price difference especially when I change oil at about 2k anyway.
actually if one plans to change oil that often I doubt there will be any advandage of one oil over another so long as they both are made to the same specs and meet the Kawi recommendations. I would however, stay away from any oil containing any sort of anti friction ingredient.

There have been a couple of threads about synthetic oil use. I remember that they said there are certain types to avoid as they can damage the clutch since it uses the same oil. Think it was synthetics with teflon or other anti-friction type ingredients. There are some very knowledgable folks here.

Use Mobil 1 syn. motorcycle oil rated JASCO MA. in 10w-40 or 20w-50 and follow the recommended oil change interval recommended by Kaw. Great protection for the whole change interval.

I found my both my 800B that I traded and the 1500E I have now run/shift smoother with Valvoline DuraBlend than they did/do with straight dino oil. I haven't ever used straight synthetic in my bikes or cars/trucks. In the summer (now) with air temps in the mid to upper 90's, I use 20w-50. In the fall when the evening temps drop back into the 50's, I'll switch back to 10w-40, very important on the 800 since it is such a cold-natured beast. Been working fine for me, and I highly recommend it. I follow the MOM schedule for oil changes, and pull the screen out and clean it with every change.

Oh yeah, one other thing: whichever brand/weight you decide on, be sure it is NOT energy-conserving oil. If it is, the bottle will tell you in the circle designating the specs of the oil.

I work for Napa and yesterday we got information on a new oil released by Valvoline, specifically designed for motorcycles. It is available in 10w40 as well as 20w50 for bikes also a 4 stroke ATV version. I am going to give it a try for my first oil change on my bike this weekend. The Valvoline part numbers are
10w40 motorcycle #740
20w50 motorcycle #743
10w40 ATV #749
It runs $3.49 a quart at the Napa stores in Rhode Island. There's specs and what not available at Valvoline's website.

Steve

P.S. Napa can get oil filters for most motorcycles in case anyone has had any trouble.

Rotella synthetic 5W40 if you must go synthetic. Rotella T 15W40 for dino oil. It's relatively inexpensive and good for bikes.

Pennzoil Synthetic 20/50 car oil in Florida where it is Africa hot. Works great, no problems whatsoever. I am a big believer in synthetic oil. I use it in all my vehicles.

Default Oil change

I would strongly recommend that you use Amsoil synthetic. They just released two new motorcycle oils that blow all of the competition away. Plus if you have a filter on your bike, you can use the oil for twice as long! They also have great oils for cars, too. I am changing my oil once a year or 25,000 miles!

The new motorcycle oils offer great rust protection as well. If interested, check out my Amsoil dealer's website. www.lubedealer.com/jtubbs

Check out this site. http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html It'll give you some good info to make your own decision.

After a lot of research I chose Rotella synthetic With Pure One filter. Rotella Syn @ Hellmart bout $13.75/gal. Filter @ Advance Auto bout $5.
