Default Front sprocket for chain seems loose...normal?

I've had a few sportbikes years ago and decided to pick up a 91 Kawasaki KLR650 to slowly get back into motorcycling again....had to put a chain on this one as the owner never really looked after it much (only 10,000km re:6000 miles)
Teeth for both front and back sprockets seemed ok so I just picked up a new chain for it but I noticed when cleaning that the front sprocket is actually loose! The retainer(?) for it was on tight and altho you could sorta rock the sprocket back and forth, it didnt seem there was much I could do so I put it altogether and everything seems ok....is this normal for the KLR?
I would think the front sprocket should be rigidly affixed onto the shaft but this is only my second enduro and my first one I never did replace the chain.
    Any takers on this?
    Thanx

On my EX500 it is the same, I would think that that sounds normal.
