Default Neutral issues

My daughter has an 88 Ninja 600. Runs great, but when you're trying to put it in neutral, it sticks. You either have to pull up real hard and steady to get it into neutral. Its also hard to go from 2nd to neutral by pushing it down. Usually just pops past it into 1st. After a few seconds of constant pressure, it sometimes goes in. Other times (and an easier way i found out) I would rev it up to around 2500 rpm and it would pop into neutral with very little pressure. Any way to fix this problem or does she have to put up with a sore foot from putting it into neutral every time. What could be wrong with it? Shifts into every other gear easily.

does it shift to neutral from 1st fine (at a standstill)? I believe it should have the "neutral finder" so it shouldn't allow you to shift into 2nd from 1st if you're stopped.

Just curious. Sorry I don't really have any ideas on how to repair your problem, but I'll be interested to know what others tell you (I have a 94 600R).

It shifts from neutral to first fine, just not from 1st to neutral unless I rev it up over 2,000 rpm.

That's not normal at all. It's possible sign of a shift detent problem or a fork issue, clutch in need of adjustment or perhaps bent shift linkage.

How's the clutch adjustment?

Is there any problem with bent shift linkage?

When in neutral you should not be able to shift into second when not moving. Will it do that?

The shift linkage is straight, not bent at all. Clutch adjustment feels ok. I don't have a repair manual on it yet. No it won't shift into 2nd from a standstill, just 1st, and it goes into that gear very easily. If I just tap the throttle while pulling up into neutral, it works fine, just won't do it at idle. The idle is set at around 1100 rpm. A quick hard tap of the throttle puts it over 2,000 and it pops right in.

Hi all,

I just bought an '90 GPZ600R (zx600). I have a very similar problem.
I goes like this: While the engine is cold everything is ok. After the engine heats up it is harder and harder to go from first gear to neutral. You have to use a lot of force or rev the engine a little. If you are moving, even at slow speed, it's ok.

I noticed this problem after I changed the oil, but I only rode the bike for 20km before changing the oil sa I can't be sure.

Also after the engine heats up, the clutch seems to stick a little in the first gear.
This only happens at idle , if you rev the engine it's ok.

If you guys have any idea what to check, I'd be very grateful
This is my first bike and I'm kind of worried.

Try this and see what happens. When at a stop and it won't shift into neutral, try coasting backwards a few feet and see if there's any change. Also, try some spray lube on the shift shaft where it comes through the engine cover and see if it helps at all.

From first to neutral, the output shaft gear positions are such that the shift drum should be rotating, moving the fork and sliding first gear engagement dogs on 5th gear out of the gear dog slots in first gear.

I'll try coasting it back a few feet this weekend when I take it out again. Also try the spray lube.
Another question ... where can I find a stock air filter? All I see everywhere are K&N's for $45 or more. I just want a cheap, stock replacement.

http://www.bikebandit.com/partsbandi...MH0665LF.a sp

OEM filter...$25.00 plus a really nice online parts lookup. Click on the OEM Parts image and follow the screens...very simple...

Thanx Larry. I must've missed it. I use bikebandit for my 79 GS550L, but never thought of looking there for the Ninja.

The Gpz has ball bearing clutch plates that fling outward, it could be that the ball bearing are rusty and hence making it difficult for the gears to be selected. I read this briefly somewhere but cannot remember where. I will look into it a bit further and reply to this. but this is a start.
