Default Bayou 220 Problem

I bought two Bayou 220's about a month ago. Rebuilt one of them and I'm not trying to access the condition of the second. After getting it started I found that the engine will blow smoke and oil out of the vent lines on top of the engine. So much so that the old owners had plugged the vent lines with bolts to keep the from smoking and leaking. Both bikes were run without air cleaners which didn't do the engines any good. Any suggestions as to why this bike is blowing the oil out?? Any remedies?? It's a 1993 Kawasaki Bayou 220. Thanks

cause it needs a new top end. (rings/cyclinder are prob. shot/scratched to hell) do a compression check on it and im betting its really low.im amazed it actually starts from the sounds of it. also make sure its not WAY over full of oil

It's not overfull with oil. We removed the clutch side cover and borrowed the centrifugal clutch from this bike and used it on the other one I rebuilt for my son until the new one came in. Haven't done a compression test yet. We were already thinking the bike would need a top end rebuild. I'm just hoping the top end doesn't end up costing me as much as the other bike did. I ended up having to change the cam, bearings, lifters, valve adjuster screws, and purchase the front cam chain guard to install since the person rebuilding the bike at a earlier date forgot to reinstall it. I'm not keeping this bike so I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on it. Thanks for the advice.

I say your best bet if your getting rid of it is to sell it as is because its gonna cost a pretty penny to do the work!

Hi all. I have a bayou 220 a 1988 I think. it runs great. but I am having starter problems. I replaced the starter motor and the battery. the selonoid is bad but I jumped around it. if I trip the compression release and hold it the motor will crank over. but if the release is not triped the engine will only crank over about once a minute not fast enough to start. recoil starting works fine. I've ordered a manual but has anyone ran into this before? is there something I am missing in the gear arrangement that will cause this?

thanks for any help or suggestions.

I have a 2006 Kawasaki Bayou 220/250. The quad runs fine at idle, and while accelerating soft or hard. When I ease off the gas to maintain speed and stop accelerating the quad misfires and decelerates, often backfires when going down hills. Other than that there is no loss of power when accelerating. I have changed oil, filter, air filter and plug. Any help would be appreciated.
