Default 89 zx600R Valve Adjustment

I am trying to adjust the valves on the bike, and I have run into a snag. When I got the bike, the bike was not timed, so I followed the Manual (clymer). The problem is that when I am trying to check the clearances, #2 pistons exhaust valve is partially depressed. The manual was not crystal clear on this, so I might have a timing problem.

I set the timing like this:
I turned the crankshaft untill the mark on the rotor "T" (there is a "T", "F", "1" & "4" all together) was aligned with the timing mark on the engine. I set the camshafts (in & ex) facing away from each other, and counted of the 42 camchain pins to complete the timing, as per the manual. But in this position, the #2 piston exhaust valve is partially depressed. Something is wrong here...

Now when I turn the engine over a full turn, all the valves I need to check are not depressed. Anybody have this happen to them? and should I check the clearances like this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Any chance you could post the full procedure? I may need to do the same thing, but don't have a manual. Thanks.

You have a bent valve.

when i do my 87 600rx i just turn the cam lobes away from the rocker arms and adjust them at .009 and .007 i think is what clearance they call for, or i at least go to the most clearance allowed in the manuel because mine always seem to tighten just a little.

Well, the Clymer manual left a little to the imigination! Not a good thing when trying to do timing... adjust valves.. etc... I basically read the whole darn thing, and think (it was very vague in this area) you are supposed to turn the enging over one complete revolution, then everything lines up perfectly so you can adjust the valves (kind of hard to adjust a valve that is partially depressed!)

Anyone have a service manual to check this out?
