Default backfiring out of left carb?

hello all its been a long time since ive been in here ive got a 440 ltd 1981 the bike was given to me, i was told that it sat up for quite a while, well last year i started working on it, i got it running then things got a little crazy around the work place and i put the project off well now im back at it, i went out to the shop the other day and turned the engine over a couple of times and she fired up. but she started backfiring through the carbs after she warmed up, so i took off the air box and started her again it lookes like its just the left carb also looks like the bike is spitting an awful lot of oil out of the breather tube? any suggestions as how to correct the carbs? and is oil supposed to be coming out of the breather? thanks

Hey,

Same bike same problem with the backfire, plus a few others. Make sure that the carbs are synched, and ya, give them a good cleaning.

ok then you have other problems w/ the oil. either WAY TO MUCH or your rings are shot and allowing way to much pressure into the crankcase.

as for synching the carbs ya have to have a tool to do the job correctly.
motion pro carb stics are what i use. lots of others out there that do the same job.

Most cases of backfiring on a 440 are due to old carb boots not sealing. Buy new ones. The oil out the breather would be your piston rings are not sealing due to excessive clearance between the pistons/bores OR they are just shot OR the cylinder walls are oil fouled and glazed and need to be honed and new rings installed. You could also have a cracked ring or a chunk of the material between the rings missing.
