Posted this in the wrong forum first. Oops.
I've got an 84 Kawasaki KZ 550 that keeps blowing the first of five fuses in the fuse box. The guy I bought it from rode it over here last week and I got it started after he left. He's coming over tomorrow to look at it, so I'm pretty sure he hasn't done anything underhanded. The day after I bought it, it wouldn't start. I had the battery checked, and it was depleted. I bought a new one and charged it at home. After putting that in the bike, it still wouldn't start. I then noticed the first fuse was blown so I replaced the 10A fuse with a 14A one. As soon as it made contact with the bike, it blew. I've checked all the wiring and can't find a short anywhere. No matter how I do it, if there is a fuse in the slot and the battery is hooked up, the fuse blows. Any ideas? Isaac |

If it were me, I would check all of the wires that run under the seat, under the tank and through the headlight. Check any place where rubbing could wear away the insulation on wires. Also check the kill switch and head tube where the wires run to headlight.

blowing fuses, normally, point to a short someplace. I would follow vulcan's advice and start there, and work your way around the bike.
Also, a Clymer's might help out with some ideas on other things to check. |

i had the same problem with my 77 when i first bought it. I Just started following wires all over the bike and found a spot where one had vibrated the rubber off of the wire and was grounding to the frame. Then i wrapped that spot in a little electrical tape and it fixed the problem

Look at the ignition switch..
Also Never Never go up in amp fuses... If it's a 10 ya pull replace it with a 10a A great way to start a fire.... So with the ingnition switch.. pull the conector off than replace the fuse.. If none blow.. than the short is there.. I suspect thats it... Did ya wash the bike after he rode it over??? Just a thought... Also welcome!!!! Dave |
