Default bike is in the shop, with more problems

droped the bike of a couple of weeks ago, the bike just turned 16,000 miles, it definetley needed a valve adjustment, while it was there I asked them to clean the carbs, the bike started sputtering a few days prior to taken it in.. so they called to say they have done both, but they cant figure out why the bikes makes no power from 4k to 8k rpms after that the power is there.. I noticed this too, I thought it was a combination of the valves and carb cleaning.... anyone here have any idea's on what could cause this?? I would like to give him a call with some suggestions..

well, they told me when they cleaned the carbs they had to pull out the plugs on the mixture screws, I asked them if there was an after market jet kit, or even checked to see if the needles and needle jet were worn.. they said they never checked, I said if you had to remove the plugs, that should threw up a red flag! so they are going to first do a compression check, check the ignition, before the get back into the carbs.. so, I dont even want to ask how much this is going to cost.. probaly a 1/3 cost of the bike

If your bike lacks power in the mid-range, I would not blame the problem on the removal of the caps over the mixture screws. The mixture screws primarily affect idle and just off idle. Have you modified the airbox or added an aftermarket set of pipes? You say the bike lacks power... has the jet needles been shimmed or reclipped? How about rejetting? Has that been done? Also, check any inline gas filter to ensure it has been recently changed and that the gas line isn't kinked. Last, I would measure valve clearances to ensure that they are within spec. You don't have to remove the cams to do this; only remove the valve cover. Buy a set of feeler gauges that can accomodate the small clearances on your bike... Sears sells this type feeler gauge with the smallest blade at .051mm.
