    Default 900 Intake Question

This is regarding my 900 Classic:

Got a question for any of you all that have done an intake mod. I had read, and, was warned about oil in the air cleaner housing. I completely understand the theory of the crankcase hose (breather). But, after finding the amount of oil, (fortunately, it was cold in the garage and the oil was like paste,) I plan on mounting a breather filter and re-routing the line. The Thunder Tornado has a nipple for the line to go in the intake, but, I don't believe that it is a good thing for all that oil going into the intake manifold and injection system. I wonder if somehow the routing into the filter actually creates a vacuum and pulls more oil than just mist into the air filter??? Any one in the know??? My research tells me that re-routing and adding a filter eliminates the oil. Folks have run 2,000+ miles with no oil dripping from an add on breather filter.
    Any response will be appreciated.

    Jack

I don't have a photo but I will try to tell you what I did.
If you take the left chrome cover off the one that covers the coils.
Remove the two bolts on the small frame that holds the coils to the bike.
Now you can see the cranckcase breather hose coming out of the motor.
If you notice the hose has a 90° bend in it very close to the motor.
It sticks out about an inch and then bends 90°, you want to cut this hose about one inch passed the 90° bend and turn it straight up.
The small cranckcase breather I bought would then go into the hose and sits straight up and down.
Replace coils and bolts, then the chrome cover. Done.
I have not had a drop of oil yet!
    Good luck

    Thanks Pooker, good to hear.
I've looked at a couple of options on mounting locations, Gadget included.
A guy on the Delphi site has a "how to" that's a little more elaborate than I
care to endure. They all say that the oil problem is solved when you add the breather. It makes sense to me that the oil build-up would flow back down into the crankcase, instead of all over the inside of the air cleaner. Or worse, our new intakes! Wait till more of the folks start looking in their air cleaners. The forum will be buzzin'.

On long rides at sustained highway speeds some 1500 and 1600 owners with the stock oil breather have noticed somewhat significant oil loss over hundreds of miles due to that vacuum pull. I use a chrome external breather I got from JC Whitney on my 1500 and have never had that happen. It just can't be good for carbs and throttle bodies to suck in all that oil.

Route it over your chain and get a free drip of oil on it every now and then.

I would be very interested in those pics of how you did this..and what "small crankcase breather you bought...just opened my air filter box...and a significant amount of oil drained out! granted the guy I just bought it from confessed he hadnt changed the oil in it since he got it in May of 2006, on top of that..., so after I got it home from its oil change at the dealer, I decided to open it up...so I dont know if the dealer over filled the crankcase or if it is a years worth of breather blow-by (he also told me his wife got ticked off and kicked it over on the same side, so could be that too..bent the crud out of the brake handle)

I took a length of transmission fluid hose from the engine, routed it up high under the fuel tank, and back down to the stock location on the air cleaner. No problems since.

My commute is normally at 70+mph, 60 miles a day. That's a lot of time spent at around 4000rpm.

Yea my bike is my commuter car in the summertime.
