Ninja 600 (ZX600-c) Headlight Question

This is probably the worst question anyone has ever asked here, but I just spent the last couple hours trying (and failing) to figure out the answer...

I have a 1993 Ninja 600r (a ZX600-C), and I'm trying to install a headlight modulator. The problem is I can't seem to get the headlight off, and the service manual tells me everything except how to do this. I've tried reaching in below the gages to unclip the power connector (I can't remember if it is an H4 or an H7), but can't seem to get it lose, and there is so little space that I can't figure out why. I removed my windscreen and tried to unclip the front of the headlight, but that didn't seem to release anything either. So, before I take my bike almost completely apart to try to get this lose, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would take the upper fairing off. it will be easy to get to then.
