Made It To Second Gear

Hey, i did a search and came up short, i'm sorta green when it comes to carbs and motorcycles, i've worked mainly on cars.
I have a 89' ZX600 i purchased it and it worked fine when the guy was starting it (it was already warm) i figured there'd be problems. When i got it i personally couldn't get it to start, i'm figuring the carbs need to be cleaned, the only question is... is there a way of cleaning them while still on the bike? or do i have to physically remove them? If so, how difficult is it to remove and anyone have any tips/advice to give me? :p thanks alot, sorry if this is a sorta dumb question!! |

+1^^ - definately the place to start. Removing/installing the carb is not a difficult process with minimal mechanical abilities, but if you are going to be doing any kind of work on your bike, you really need to acquire a manual.
I don't know your bike specifically, but based on mine you'd have to strip it down enough to remove the tank, then possibly the air box, then the carbs. Alwasys identify where you remove hoses/vacuum lines from so you know where they go when you reinstall them. |

hmmm, my haynes manual gave carb removal and cleaning a 4 out of 5 diffculty level. so Im kinda scared to mess with it cause Im low on cash (thats also the reason I want to mess with it....) and I dont want to cause more damage than the carb cleaning would end up costing me.

Cleaning carbs is not that hard it cost about $50 to maybe $80 per carb(around here any ways)mostly all you need is some sort of cleaner and a good souce of air to blow it out, or off, small screwdrivers

BEANER, why does it cost $50-$80 per carb? I just clean them and replace what I think needs replacing-have done more carbs than I count doing it this way and never had a prob.

I spend about $1.50-$20(carb cleaner and occasionally replacement parts) per carb and a hour of time. I dont know how you could spend $50+ unless the carbs were trashed.
