Default Re: Why should you not neglect your valves

My first bike and EX500 sat for over a year while the previous owner messed with it... mostly wiring but a lot of attempted starts.
I got it and of course thought carburetor. Cleaned those out and thrashed the starter or another few months trying everything to get it started.

This might be a stupid question... should there be concern then with automatic adjusting valves... say on a 1500?

I'm not an expert on the current valve set up on you bike, but if they are anything like a hydraulic set up on car engines you don't do anything with them. Worst thing that could happen would be a seal would go out on them and they wouldn't pump up and if they didn't you'd know it. My 89 Sentra has 420,000 miles and the worst it does is that sometimes the oil drains out of one or two and on start up it taps for about 3 sec. and them pumps up and is fine.

Default Valve clearance on 2000, 1500 classic fi (34000 km)

According to my owners manual "Valve seat wear is automatically compensated, so inspection and adjustment of the valve clearance are not necessary on this motorcycle". So my question is, should valves be checked every so often or as Kawi claims, not necessary?

You have hydraulic valves... self adjusting. Not necessary for you to check!

Good thread.
I have seen firsthand results from the loss of valve clearances more than once. And still some look at me like I have 3 eyes when I tell them to check valve clearances.

How about valve TAPPING? My book says clearance is not adjustable, but I swear I'm hearing valve tapping... How serious of an issue is this?
