    Default Chain Rattle

Just adjusted the chain on my 81 KZ550 LTD. Was at about 1 and a half inches play, took it down to about 1 inch. Made sure the notches on the adjusters were in the same spot on the swingarm marks. Now the chain 'rattles' as it travels. Didn't do this before. It sounds very rough at times, and occurs regardless of speed (I can even get it to do it just turning the wheel on the centerstand.) I have lubed the chain, and tested the wear at the back sprocket, and it seems ok. Any suggestions?

Off hand I'd say it's one or more of the following. Too tight, sprockets worn and need replaced, rollers worn and chain needs replaced.

Loosened the chain a bit, much better. Still some rattle when backing up, is this normal?

That sounds like a worn sprocket and chain not meshing together well because of stretch and worn/hooked teeth. And no thats not normal.

OK, new sprockets and chain coming up. THanks again. Stargate going to owe you a steak dinner for all the instruction.

When there is weight on your bike the chain tension is tighter than when the bike is on its center stand. I learned from an old flat track Harley racer turned KAW dealer who suggested running the chain as loose as possible just so it doesn't hit anything. I immediately made that adjustment on my 1980 550 LTD and later my 1984 GPz 1100. I also lube the chain at the end of a riding day only. I was initially concerned about the loose chain but after experiencing much longer chain life with no mechanical problems even at 140+ mph I stick by Stan's advice.

That depends on how much the rider weighs and how much preload is set on the shock springs. It can vary for every bike and rider combo.

If you ever had a chain jump off the sprocket and lock up the rear wheel you might change your mind on that point. Been there done that, but luckily it was at about 30 mph and I was able to keep the rubber side down until it stopped.
